An interpenetrating polymer network is prepd. by mixing a silane (I) with an epoxy resin having >=2 oxirane gps. per molecule; distributing water uniformly throughout the mixt. in an amt. sufficient to effect hydrolytic polycondensation of the silane; and simultaneously reacting the epoxy resin with an amino curing agent to form intertwined polymerised epoxy resin and polysiloxane networks. (I) is an alkoxy-, alkyltrialkoxy- or aryltrialkoxy-silane or its hydrolytic polycondensate. The prod. provides coating of high solvent acid and base resistance. It has physical and chemical properties improved over either of the polymeric components alone. Coatings can be formed on, e.g., steel structures of chemical processing plants, oil refineries and drilling platforms, and internal oil tank surfaces.
