Prodn. of H3PO4 is carried out by (a) reacting a Ca phosphate material with excess HSO3F in the presence of a catalytic amt. of H2O to form PF5 and POF3, (b) sepg. volatile prods., and (c) hydrolysing the PF5 and POF3 to form H3PO4 and HF. Also claimed in the prodn. of PF5 by carrying out steps (a) and (b) and recovering PF5 from the volatile prods. The process gives high (>98%) conversions of the P content of the starting material to PF5 and POF3, which yield high-grade H3PO4. The by-produced HF can be reacted with SO3 to regenerate HSO3F.
