An electromagnetic locking system is used to electrically control a lock. The key contains a number of permanent magnets along its axis. The magnets are also spaced angularly to provide a large number of combinations. A cylindrical key has index marks (17) on the ends which are angularly equidistant. Circular discs (14e) each with six cut out sections (16) are inserted in the key. Certain of the cut outs contain a permanent magnet (15) and are aligned such that the index marks can be used to align the key with an index on the lock cylinder. This allows use as a combination lock. Detectors are mounted in the cylinder to align with the key magnets. These detectors are connected to a microprocessor which is itself connected to a logic circuit. This circuit controls application of power via a triac to the electromagnetic lock.
