Description
PLThere are known electroosmotic effects on mixtures containing suspensions of solids in an aqueous medium. This way, an electric current can be used to settle fine clay suspensions in the water, or to separate the water from peat and similar mixtures. However, when it comes to the deposition of solids contained in the form of suspensions or colloidal liquids in water-immiscible liquids, the conductivity of which is practically zero, then electrosmosis cannot be directly applied. Such solids from liquids which do not conduct electricity and are not miscible with aqueous solutions, i.e. for the separation of fine-crystalline paraffin from petroleum distillates or colloidal suspensions of asphalt from crude oil , its distillates or distillation residues and the like. Experience has shown that, if such liquids are administered with small amounts of suitable non-aqueous substances, which generate ions in these liquids, i.e. with certain organic acids, such as acetic or alcoholic solutions, ethers, etc. of certain compounds, such as potassium hydroxide, zinc chloride and other ionizing substances and in anhydrous solutions, then the electro-osmotic action, using even not very high DC voltages, not exceeding 1000 Volt, gives good results. Thanks to this invention, it is possible to separate the hard-to-filter paraffin oil from paraffin crystals in the form of a compact mass. Likewise, it is possible to separate the asphalt from the petroleum. PL
