Abstract

In one aspect, the invention relates to a method for improved dewatering of a settling pond with a mechanical dewatering vehicle including: measuring one or more properties of a sludge to be deposited in the settling pond; determining a buoyancy profile for the vehicle, based on one or more measured properties and one or more properties of the vehicle, such that the vehicle is neutrally buoyant in the mud when deposited in the settling pond; and determining an optimal mud depth for the mud to settle in the settling pond so that the vehicle can maintain substantially shear-free drive as the vehicle traverses the mud.
