Description

011119
CONNECTOR FOR AN EXPANDABLE TUBING STRING
The invention relates to a connector for use inconnecting sections of an expandable tubing string, andin particular but not exclusively for use in the con-nection of sections of an expandable slotted tubing (EST)string as utilized in downhole applications in oil andgas production operations.
Expandable slotted tubings are known from Inter-national patent application No. PCT/EP 93/01460. Thisprior art reference discloses a slotted tube which may beexpanded downhole by running an expansion mandrel throughthe tubing whereby the slots are expanded to diamond-shaped apertures.
When a tubing is expanded it is désirable that thiscan be accomplished by a substantially uniform expansionforce, also at the locations where adjacent tubingsections are interconnected. ït is therefore an object of the présent invention toprovide a connector for an expandable tubing that can beexpanded smoothly and made up easily without requiringwelding operations.
It is observed that a connector in accordance withthe preamble of claim 1 is known from US patent2,871,034. The known connector is formed of a résilientelastomeric material which is in use pressed against theends of a pair of tubes that are made of a substantiallyrigid unyielding material. Another déformable connectoris known from German Gebrauchsmuster DE 29518333. Thisconnector comprises an external sleeve which is pressedinto the tubing ends connected thereby.
The connector according to the invention comprises aplastically expandable sleeve that is in use arranged co- 011119 axially relative to an end of each of the adjacent tubingsections, and means for fastening the sleeve to saidends, wherein the sleeve is provided with a sériés ofstaggered substantially longitudinal slots which aredéformable into diamond-shaped apertures upon expansionof the sleeve.
Preferably the outer surface of an end of each of theadjacent tubing sections has been machined away to forman annular recess in which the sleeve is located.
Alternatively the inner surface of an end of each ofthe adjacent tubing sections has been machined away toform an annular recess in which the sleeve is located.
It is preferred that the thickness of the sleeve issubstantially equal to the depth of the annular recess sothat a flush-type connection is created.
It is furthermore preferred that the fastening meanscomprise a sériés of circumferentially spaced screws thatpass through holes that are drilled through the sleeveand the adjacent wall of ends of the adjacent tubingsections. If desired the screws may be replaced by rivetsor other mechanical fasteners.
The connector according to the invention isparticularly attractive for interconnecting sections ofan expandanble string of oil and/or gas well tubularsthat may be slotted.
Further aspects, details, objects and advantages ofthe connector according to the invention will becomeapparent from the accompanying daims, abstract, drawingsand detailed description with reference to the drawings.
The invention will now be described in more detailwith reference to the accompanying drawings, in which
Fig. 1 shows a schematic side view of a plasticallyexpandable connector according to the invention whichsurrounds ends of adjacent expandable slotted tubingsections; 011119 - 3 -
Fig. 2 shows a schematic longitudinal sectionalview of a flush-type connector according to theinvention which surrounds ends of adjacent expandabletubing sections; and
Fig. 3 shows a schematic longitudinal sectionalview of a flush-type connector according to theinvention which is surrounded by ends of adjacentexpandable tubing sections.
Referring now to Fig. 1, there is shown a connectorcomprising a plastically déformable slotted sleeve 1that co-axially surrounds ends of a pair of adjacentslotted tubing sections 2 and 3. The sleeve 1 andtubing sections are each provided with a sériés ofstaggered and partially overlapping slots 4 that deformto substantially diamond shaped apertures (not shown)upon expansion of the assembly by e.g. running anexpansion mandrel (not shown) through the interior ofthe tubing sections 2 and 3.
One or more sériés of circumferentially spaced.Allen-type or other locking screws 5 fasten the sleeve1 to each of the tubing sections 2 and 3 such that theinner surface of the sleeve 1 engages the outer surfaceof the end of each tubing section 2 and 3 both before, during and after the expansion process. The screws 5are located in nodes between slots 4.
Referring now to Fig. 2 there is shown a flush-typeconnector comprising a plastically déformable solid orslotted sleeve 6 that surrounds ends 7 of adjacentsolid or slotted tubing sections 8 and 9, which ends 7hâve been machined away to form an annular recess 10 inwhich the sleeve 6 is located. The thickness of thesleeve 6 substantially equals the depth of the recess10 to form a flush-type connector. 011119 - 4 -
The connector furthermore comprises a sériés ofcircumferentially spaced Allen-type or other lockingscrews 11 to fasten the sleeve 6 to each of the tubingsections 8 and 9 such that the inner surface of thesleeve 6 engages the outer surface of the ends 7 of theadjacent tubing sections 8 and 9 both before, duringand after the expansion process.
Referring now to Figure 3 there is shown a flush-type connector comprising a plastically déformablesolid or slotted sleeve 16 that is surrounded byends 17 of adjacent solid or slotted tubing sections 18and 19, respectively, which ends 17 hâve been machinedaway to form an annular recess 20 in which thesleeve 16 is located. The thickness of the sleevesubstantially equals the depth of the recess 20 to forma flush-type connector that smoothly deforms plasti-cally together with the ends of the tubing sections 18and 19 during the expansion process.
The connector of Fig. 3 furthermore comprises.asériés of circumferentially spaced Allen-type lockingscrews 21 to fasten the sleeve 16 to each of the tubingsections 18 and 19 such that the outer surface of thesleeve 16 firmly engages the inner surface of theends 17 of the adjacent tubing sections 8 and 9 bothbefore, during and after the expansion process.
