Abstract
retrofit module configured for use with a door closer having a pinion. The retrofit module generally includes a case, an output shaft, a motor, and a control assembly. The output shaft is rotatably mounted in the case, and is configured for rotational coupling with the pinion. The motor is mounted to the case, and is operable to rotate the output shaft in a door-opening direction. The control assembly is mounted to the case, and is configured to operate the motor to drive the output shaft in the door-opening direction in response to an actuating signal.
Claims (34)
1. A retrofit module configured for use with an ng door closer sing a , the retrofit module comprising: a case; an output shaft rotatably d in the case, wherein the output shaft is configured for rotational coupling with the pinion; a motor mounted to the case, wherein the motor is operable to rotate the output shaft in a pening direction; and a control assembly mounted to the case, wherein the control assembly is configured to operate the motor to drive the output shaft in the door-opening direction in response to an actuating signal; and wherein the case is adapted to be mounted to at least one mounting location of a closer body of the existing door closer to secure the retrofit module to the existing door closer; and wherein the case includes a case mounting pattern having at least one mounting aperture for mounting the retrofit module to a closer body mounting pattern of a closer body of the existing door closer.

The retrofit module of claim 1, further comprising a power transfer assembly operable to t the control assembly to line power, the power transfer assembly sing a plug configured for engagement with an electrical outlet, wherein the power transfer assembly further includes an adapter configured to convert line power ed via the electrical outlet to a lower-voltage power having a lower voltage than the line power.
3. The retrofit module of claim 1, wherein each of the case mounting pattern and the closer body mounting pattern is configured to receive a corresponding fastener for coupling of the case to the closer body of the existing door closer.
4. The retrofit module of claim 1, n the case mounting pattern is configured to correspond to the closer body mounting pattern to allow direct mounting of the retrofit module to the closer body of the existing door closer.
5. The retrofit module of claim 1, further comprising an actuator, wherein the actuator is mounted to the case and is configured to transmit the actuating signal in response to detecting a user.
6. The retrofit module of claim 1, n the motor is operably connected with the output shaft via a reduction gear set.
7. The retrofit module of claim 1, wherein the motor is operably connected with the output shaft via a clutch that enables rotation of the output shaft in a door-closing direction without back-driving the motor.
8. The it module of claim 1, further comprising a rotational position sensor configured to detect a rotational position of the output shaft; and wherein the control ly is configured to control operation of the motor based upon information received from the rotational position sensor.
9. The retrofit module of claim 1, wherein the output shaft es a shaft portion and a pinion adapter removably coupled to the shaft portion; and wherein the pinion adapter comprises a pinion interface configured for rotational coupling with the pinion, and an output shaft adapter rotationally d with the shaft portion.
10. The it module of claim 1, further comprising a wired interface removably mounted to the case; and wherein the wired interface includes at least one port that is electrically connected with the control assembly when the wired ace is mounted to the case.
11. The retrofit module of claim 1, further comprising a user interface connected with the control assembly; wherein the user interface comprises a first side and a second side opposite the first side; wherein the first side of the user interface includes a first input; wherein the second side of the user interface includes a second input; and wherein each of the first input and the second input is le to adjust a first operating characteristic of the it module.
12. The retrofit module of claim 1, r comprising a user ace connected with the control assembly; wherein the user interface comprises a first side and a second side opposite the first side; wherein the first side of the user interface includes a first visual output; wherein the second side of the user interface es a second visual output; and wherein each of the first visual output and the second visual output is operable to provide a visual tion ing a first operating characteristic of the retrofit module.
13. A retrofit kit including the retrofit module of claim 1, the retrofit kit further comprising a wireless communication module le to be placed in communication with the control assembly.
14. A retrofit kit including the retrofit module of claim 1, the retrofit kit further comprising an adapter plate comprising a first mounting pattern and a second mounting pattern; wherein the first mounting n is configured to align with the closer body mounting pattern to facilitate mounting of the adapter plate to the closer body of the existing door closer; wherein the second mounting pattern is configured to align with the case mounting pattern to facilitate mounting of the retrofit module to the adapter plate.
15. A retrofit kit including the retrofit module of claim 1, the retrofit kit further sing an actuator; and wherein the actuator is configured to transmit the actuating signal in response to detecting a user.
16. The retrofit kit of claim 15, wherein the actuator is ured to detect the user without being touched by the user.
17. A retrofit kit including the retrofit module of claim 1, the retrofit kit further comprising an override switch operable to be connected with the control assembly, the override switch having an on state and an off state; wherein, with the override switch connected to the control assembly and the override switch in the on state, operation of the retrofit module is enabled; and wherein, with the override switch connected to the control assembly and the override switch in the off state, operation of the retrofit module is disabled.
18. A method, comprising: providing a it powered opening module for installation to an existing door closer; wherein the existing door closer comprises: a closer body; a pinion rotatably mounted to the closer body for rotation in a door-closing direction and a door-opening direction te the door-closing direction, wherein the pinion is biased in the door-closing direction; and an armature connected with the pinion; wherein the retrofit powered g module comprises: a case; an output shaft rotatably mounted in the case; a motor mounted in the case and operable to rotate the output shaft; and a control assembly ured to cause the motor to urge the output shaft in a first rotational direction in response to receiving an actuating signal; wherein installation of the retrofit powered opening module to the existing door closer comprises coupling the output shaft with the pinion such that rotation of the output shaft in the first rotational direction is correlated with on of the pinion in the door-opening direction; wherein the case is mounted to at least one ng location of the closer body of the existing door closer to secure the retrofit powered opening module to the existing door closer; wherein the case includes a case mounting pattern having at least one mounting aperture for mounting the retrofit powered opening module to a closer body mounting n of the closer body of the existing door closer; and wherein the closer body mounting pattern has at least one mounting location, wherein installation of the retrofit powered opening module es mounting the retrofit powered opening module to the existing door closer by means of the case mounting pattern and the closer body mounting pattern.
19. The method of claim 18, wherein the existing door closer is mounted to an ng closure assembly of a static structure, the existing closure assembly further comprising a first component and a second component; wherein the first component comprises one of a door frame or a door movably mounted to the door frame; wherein the second component comprises the other of the door frame or the door; wherein the closer body is mounted to the first component; wherein the armature is connected n the pinion and the second component such that the pinion rotates in the door-closing direction during movement of the door from the open position toward the closed position and rotates in the door-opening direction during movement of the door from the closed position toward the open position; and wherein installation of the retrofit d opening further comprises coupling the case to at least one of the closer body or the first ent.
20. The method of claim 19, further sing: mounting an actuator to one of the closure assembly or a wall of the static structure; and in response to an actuating input provided by a user, transmitting the actuating signal from the actuator to the control assembly.
21. The method of claim 20, wherein the actuating input is a touchless actuating input.
22. The method of claim 18, wherein installation of the it powered opening module further comprises connecting the retrofit powered opening module to line power.
23. The method of claim 22, wherein the it powered opening module further ses an electrical cord including a plug; and wherein connecting the retrofit powered opening module to line power comprises ng the plug with an electrical outlet of the static structure.
24. The method of claim 18, further comprising: receiving, at the control assembly, the actuating signal; and in response to receiving the ing signal, operating, by the control assembly, the motor to urge the output shaft in the first onal direction, thereby urging the pinion to rotate in the door-opening direction.
25. The method of claim 24, wherein the retrofit powered opening module further comprises a position sensor operable to sense a rotational position of the output shaft; and wherein the method further comprises ceasing operation of the motor based upon position information transmitted by the position .
26. The method of claim 25, wherein ceasing operation of the motor based upon position information itted by the position sensor comprises ceasing operation of the motor when the on information indicates that the door is in the open position.
27. The method of claim 25, wherein ceasing operation of the motor based upon on information transmitted by the position sensor comprises ceasing operation of the motor when the position information tes that the door has been held in the open position for a predetermined time .
28. The method of claim 24, further comprising operating, by the control assembly, the motor to urge the output shaft in a second rotational direction opposite the first rotational direction, thereby urging the pinion in the door-closing direction.
29. The method of claim 28, wherein operating the motor to urge the output shaft in the second rotational direction is performed by the control assembly in response to positional information from a position sensor ting the door is at an intermediate position between the open position and the closed position during closing of the door.
30. The method of claim 18, further comprising: securing an adapter plate to the closer body; and securing the retrofit powered opening module to the adapter plate.

The method of claim 30, further comprising selecting the adapter plate from a plurality of adapter plates based upon a configuration of the ng door closer; wherein each adapter plate of the plurality of adapter plates includes a first mounting pattern and a second pattern; wherein each adapter plate includes a different first mounting pattern and the same second mounting pattern; n each first ng pattern is configured to facilitate mounting of the corresponding adapter plate to a corresponding configuration of the existing door closer; and wherein the second mounting pattern is configured to facilitate mounting of the retrofit d opening module to the adapter plate.
32. The method of claim 18, wherein coupling the output shaft with the pinion comprises coupling a pinion adapter of the output shaft with the pinion; and wherein the pinion adapter comprises a pinion interface configured for rotational coupling with the pinion and a second interface rotationally coupled with another n of the output shaft.
33. The method of claim 32, further sing selecting the pinion adapter from a plurality of pinion adapters based upon a configuration of the existing door closer; wherein each pinion adapter of the plurality of pinion adapters includes a different pinion interface geometry and the same second interface geometry; and wherein each pinion interface geometry is configured for rotational coupling with a different configuration of pinion.
34. The method of claim 18, further comprising performing installation of the it d opening module to the existing door closer. 202
