Abstract

The technology described herein generates a unique identifier for a visual media that comprises pre-printed visual indications on the visual media and a user's handwritten signature. The location of the signature on the visual media can be determined by including preprinted fiducial marks on the visual media. The fiducial markers act as landmarks that allow the size and location of the signature to be determined in absolute terms. The unique identifier is then stored in computer memory on a user-experience server. The user-experience server can associate the unique identifier with a digital asset, such as an image or video, designated by the user. When the unique identifier is provided to the user-experience server a second time, the digital asset can be retrieved and output to the computing device that provided the unique identifier.

Claims (25)

1. A method for enabling a recipient of a physical greeting card to also receive a corresponding personalized digital greeting, the method comprising: 5 obtaining from a first user device a first image of a portion of the greeting card, wherein the portion includes a handwritten marking of a user and a plurality of fiducial marks that act as landmarks that allow the size and location of the handwritten marking to be determined in absolute terms; receiving from the first user device an indication of a personalized digital 10 greeting such that said personalized digital greeting need not be stored on said first user device; receiving an instruction to associate the greeting card with the personalized digital greeting; associating the first image and the personalized greeting together within a data 15 store; receiving a second image of the portion of the greeting card from a second device; identifying the personalized greeting by analyzing the handwritten marking in relation to the plurality of fiducial marks; and 20 presenting the personalized greeting on the second device.
2. The method of claim 1, wherein identifying the personalized greeting comprises: comparing the handwritten marking and a location of the handwritten marking relative to the plurality of fiducial marks in the first image to the handwritten marking and the location of the handwritten marking relative to the plurality of fiducial marks in the second image. 5
3. The method of claim 2, wherein the first image is obtained from a first instance of a specialized application running on the first user device and the second image is obtained from a second instance of the specialized application running on the second user device.
4. The method of claim 3, wherein the specialized application provides instructions for scanning the portion of the greeting card. 10
5. The method of claim 3, wherein the specialized application performs an analysis to confirm that the portion comprises all fiducial marks printed on the greeting card.
6. The method of claim 1, wherein the portion includes a printed watermark that identifies a product class of the greeting card. 15
7. The method of claim 1, wherein the personalized greeting includes one or more of an audio, a video or pictures.
8. A method for presenting a personalized digital greeting corresponding to a physical visual media, comprising: presenting a media-identification interface on a user device that includes an 20 image capture control that shows an image to be captured by a camera on the user device and an instruction portion directing a user to point the camera at a portion of the visual media; receiving an instruction to capture a first image of the portion of the visual media, wherein the portion includes a handwritten marking of a user and a plurality of fiducial marks that allow the size and location of the handwritten marking to be determined in absolute terms; 5 requesting, from a remote system, a personalized digital greeting that is identified by analyzing the handwritten marking and a location of the handwritten marking in relation to the plurality of fiducial marks; receiving the personalized digital greeting; and presenting the personalized digital greeting via the user device. 10
9. The method of claim 8, wherein the first image is obtained from a first instance of a specialized application running on the user device.
10. The method of claim 8, wherein the portion includes a printed watermark that identifies a product class of the visual media, and wherein the printed watermark is used with the location and the handwritten marking to identify the personalized digital greeting. 15
11. The method of claim 8, wherein the media-identification interface is provided by a first instance of a specialized application running on the user device.
12. The method of claim 8, wherein the method comprises performing an analysis of the image to confirm that the portion comprises all fiducial marks printed on the visual media. 20
13. The method of claim 12, wherein the method further comprises providing a new instruction to the user to capture a second image when the portion does not comprise all fiducial marks printed on the visual media.
14. The method of claim 8, wherein the visual media includes one or more of a greeting card or an ornament.
15. The method of claim 14, wherein the personalized greeting includes one or more of an audio, a video or pictures of a person that sent the greeting card to the user of the user 5 device.
16. One or more computer storage media having computer executable instructions embodied thereon that, when executed by a computing device, cause the computing device to perform a method of enabling a personalized digital greeting to be presented to a recipient of a physical visual media, the method comprising: 10 presenting on a user device an image-capture control that shows an image to be captured by a camera of the user device; receiving an instruction to capture a first image of the portion of the physical visual media, wherein the portion includes a handwritten marking of a user and a plurality of fiducial marks that act as landmarks that allow the size and location of the 15 handwritten marking to be determined in absolute terms; receiving, via the user device, an indication of a personalized digital greeting; receiving input via the user device to associate the visual media with the personalized digital greeting such that said personalized digital greeting need not be stored on said user device; and 20 communicating an instruction to a remote server to associate the first image with the personalized digital greeting.
17. The one or more computer storage media of claim 16, wherein the method further comprises outputting a digital asset selection interface that allows the user to select the personalized digital greeting from a plurality of existing digital assets.
18. The one or more computer storage media of claim 16, wherein the method 5 further comprises outputting a digital asset selection interface that allows the user to create the personalized digital greeting using a camera in the user device.
19. The one or more computer storage media of claim 16, wherein the method comprises performing an analysis of the image to confirm that the portion comprises all fiducial marks printed on the visual media. 10
20. The one or more computer storage media of claim 16, wherein the method further comprises outputting a digital asset selection interface that allows the user to create the personalized digital greeting using a microphone in the user device.
21. The one or more computer storage media of claim 16, wherein the visual media includes one or more of a greeting card or an ornament. 15
22. The one or more computer storage media of claim 16, wherein the personalized greeting includes one or more of an audio, a video or pictures.
23. The method of claim 1, substantially as herein described with reference to any 20 embodiment disclosed.
24. The method of claim 8, substantially as herein described with reference to any embodiment disclosed.
