Abstract
coupler including a fitting for mounting to externally threaded reinforcing bar for use in concrete construction, the fitting comprising a body having a portion with an internal thread for engagement with the thread of the reinforcing bar, wherein the fitting includes an engagement portion for rotational engagement with a fastening tool for rotating said internal thread onto the external thread of the reinforcing bar, wherein the engagement portion is rotatably locked relative to the body such that rotation of the engagement portion causes rotation of the body, and the fitting is adapted such that on reaching a desired torque and/or position relative to the reinforcing bar, the engagement portion becomes rotatably unlocked relative to the body. ational engagement with a fastening tool for rotating said internal thread onto the external thread of the reinforcing bar, wherein the engagement portion is rotatably locked relative to the body such that rotation of the engagement portion causes rotation of the body, and the fitting is adapted such that on reaching a desired torque and/or position relative to the reinforcing bar, the engagement portion becomes rotatably unlocked relative to the body.
Claims (20)
1. A coupler including a fitting for mounting to externally threaded reinforcing bar for use in concrete construction, the fitting comprising a body having a portion with an internal thread for engagement with the thread of the reinforcing bar, wherein the fitting includes an engagement portion for rotational engagement with a fastening tool for rotating said internal thread onto the external thread of the reinforcing bar, wherein the engagement portion is rotatably locked relative to the body such that rotation of the engagement portion causes rotation of the body, and the fitting is adapted such that on reaching a desired torque and/or position relative to the reinforcing bar, the engagement portion becomes rotatably unlocked relative to the body.
2. A coupler as claimed in claim 1, wherein the engagement portion is rotatably locked relative to the body by one or more keyways.
3. A coupler as claimed in claim 2, wherein said one or more keyways includes a frangible part which breaks or at least deforms when the desired torque and or position is achieved.
4. A coupler as claimed in claim 2, wherein the engagement portion is rotatably locked relative to the body by one or more frangible parts.
5. A coupler as claimed in claim 1, wherein the engagement portion and/or the body deform, at an interface between the engagement portion and the body, when the desired torque and/or position is achieved.

A coupler including a fitting for mounting to externally threaded reinforcing bar for use in concrete construction, the fitting comprising a body having a portion with an internal thread for engagement with the thread of the reinforcing bar, wherein the fitting includes an indicator which changes from a first condition to a second condition during rotating said internal thread onto the external thread of the reinforcing bar on reaching a desired torque and/or position of the fitting relative to the reinforcing bar.

A coupler as claimed in claim 6, wherein the indicator is in the form of a crossbar spanning the internal thread and arranged such that the indicator is pushed from the first condition to a second condition by an end of the reinforcing bar when the fitting reaches the desired position relative to the reinforcing bar.
8. A coupler as claimed in claim 6 or claim 7, wherein the indicator is visible externally of the fitting so as to provide a visual indicator externally of the fitting between the first condition and the second condition.
9. A coupler including: a first fitting for mounting to a first externally threaded reinforcing bar for use in concrete construction, the first fitting comprising a first body having a portion with an internal thread for engagement with the thread of the first reinforcing bar, the first fitting having a first connecting thread; a second fitting for mounting to a second externally threaded reinforcing bar for use in concrete construction, the second fitting comprising a second body having a portion with an internal thread for engagement with the thread of the reinforcing bar, the second fitting having a second connecting thread for connecting the second fitting to the first fitting; and a threaded spanning device arranged for threaded connection to the first connecting thread and threaded connection to the second connecting thread.
10. A coupler as claimed in claim 9, wherein the threaded spanning device includes an elongated threaded part having an engagement portion for coupling to a fastening tool for rotating the threaded spanning device relative to the first connecting thread and the second connecting thread.
11. A coupler as claimed in claim 10, wherein the threaded spanning device includes a male threaded part, a female threaded nut, and a female threaded locking nut.

A coupler as claimed in claim 11, wherein the first connecting thread is a male thread, the second connecting thread is a female thread, the male threaded part is threadedly inserted into the second connecting thread, the female threaded nut is threaded to span between the first connecting thread and the male threaded part, and the female threaded locking nut is threaded to abut against the female threaded nut.
13. A method of coupling a first externally threaded reinforcing bar to a second externally threaded reinforcing bar, including the steps of: rotating a first fitting such that an internal thread of the first fitting is in engagement with the external thread of the first reinforcing bar; rotating a second fitting such that an internal thread of the second fitting is in engagement with the external thread of the second reinforcing bar; and providing a threaded spanning device to connect a first connecting thread of the first fitting with a second connecting thread of the second fitting.
14. A method as claimed in claim 13, wherein the step of providing a threaded spanning device includes providing an elongated threaded part in the form of a male threaded part, a female threaded nut and a female threaded locking nut.
15. A method as claimed in claim 14, including the steps of: threadedly inserting the male threaded part into the second connecting thread; rotating the female threaded nut to span between the first connecting thread and the male threaded part.
16. A method as claimed in claim 15, further including the step of spreading the female threaded locking nut to abut against the female threaded nut.
17. A method as claimed in any one of claims 13 to 16, wherein the first externally threaded reinforcing bar is fixed against rotation and the second externally threaded reinforcing bar is fixed against rotation.
18. A method as claimed in claim 17, wherein the first externally threaded reinforcing bar is substantially aligned on a common longitudinal axis with the second externally threaded reinforcing bar.
19. A coupler as claimed in claim one, wherein the engagement portion becomes rotatably unlocked relative to the body by shearing from the body.
20. A method of tightening a coupler onto externally threaded reinforcing bar for use in concrete construction, the method including the steps of providing the coupler with a pair of spaced indicators, threading the coupler onto the reinforcing bar until the coupler abuts an internal stop, marking the reinforcing bar at a first one of the spaced indicators, and rotating the coupler until the second one of the spaced indicators aligns with said marking.
