Abstract
Disclosed is a lock comprising a lock housing, a lock bolt, a lock bolt lock and an externally operable actuator that moves the lock bolt between a locking and unlocking position by acting on a lock bolt driver that is mounted by the lock bolt to move with it between the locking and unlocking position. The lock bolt driver is displaceable or deflectable, against a bias, by the actuator relative to both the lock bolt and the actuator. The actuator is movable into a space between two driving surfaces of the driver by displacing or deflecting it relative to both the lock bolt and the actuator. The displaceable or deflectable driver significantly alleviates the risk of jamming thereby allowing less strict dimensional tolerances to be used in fabricating the actuator, the driver and/or other components.
Claims (16)
1. A lock comprising a lock housing retaining a lock bolt for movement between a locking on and an unlocking on relative to the lock housing, wherein the locking position 5 corresponds to the lock bolt extending from the housing and the unlocking on corresponds to the lock bolt being retracted into the lock housing; an actuator that is a cam actuator operable from externally of the lock housing and capable of moving the lock bolt between its locking position and unlocking position, by acting on a lock bolt driver of a unitary construction d to the lock bolt, wherein the 10 lock bolt driver is mounted by the lock bolt to move with the lock bolt between the locking position and the unlocking on of the lock bolt; a lock bolt lock that prevents the lock bolt moving from both its locking position and unlocking position, and which is operable by the cam actuator via the lock bolt driver to a ion to free the lock bolt for movement from its locking position and its unlocking 15 position; wherein the lock bolt driver is displaceable or deflectable, against a bias, by the cam actuator relative to both the lock bolt and the cam actuator when the cam actuator is caused to move to the condition to free the lock bolt for movement, thereby facilitating alignment of the lock bolt with the cam actuator, 20 wherein the lock bolt driver presents two driving surfaces, one for engagement by the cam actuator to move the lock bolt to the g position and the other for engagement by the cam actuator to move the lock bolt to the unlocking position, and wherein the cam actuator is movable into a space between the two driving surfaces of the lock bolt driver by displacing or deflecting the lock bolt driver ve to both the 25 lock bolt and the cam actuator.
2. A lock as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the lock bolt moves linearly n the g and unlocking positions.
3. A lock as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the lock bolt is a sliding bolt.
4. A lock as claimed in claim 1 wherein the lock bolt moves rotationally between the 35 g and unlocking positions.
5. A lock as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the lock is a mortise lock. 5
6. A lock as claimed in any one of the preceding claims n the cam or rotates in a first ion to cause the lock bolt to move towards the unlocking position and rotates in a second direction that is opposite the first direction to cause the lock bolt to move towards the locking position. 10
7. A lock as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the lock bolt driver is floatingly mounted by the lock bolt to move with the lock bolt between the locking position and the unlocking position.

A lock as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the lock bolt driver is 15 mounted by the lock bolt in a manner to be displaced or deflected t the bias by the cam actuator moving in one direction and ued movement in the one ion subsequently causes the cam actuator and the lock bolt driver to cooperate to move the lock bolt.
9. A lock as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the lock bolt lock is mounted to move with the lock bolt driver as it moves n positions corresponding to the locking position and the unlocking position of the lock bolt. 25
10. A lock as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the lock bolt lock is mounted to move with the lock bolt between the locking position and the unlocking position of the lock bolt.
11. A lock as d in any one of the preceding claims wherein the lock bolt lock is 30 mounted by the lock housing to move the lock bolt between a locking position and an unlocking position.
12. A lock as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the cam actuator includes a key barrel.
13. A lock as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the lock bolt driver presents a pair of external ramped surfaces that cause the cam actuator to ride over the lock bolt driver when displacing or deflecting the lock bolt driver to a condition to release the lock bolt lock.
14. A lock as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the lock bolt driver moves from a g position to deflected position as the cam actuator moves to operate the lock bolt lock to free the lock bolt for movement.
15. A lock as claimed in claim 14 wherein the lock bolt driver is biased to the driving position. 5
16. A lock as claimed in claim 14 or 15 wherein the lock bolt driver in the driving on presents a surface for contact by the cam actuator to allow the cam actuator to move the lock bolt. 1:13 βAL i 1-75qu 3 ?gure; gt?! Haw. re, SC. β β I / β x"? .
