Abstract
This invention relates to a mortice lock assembly (1) including a manual actuator (28) which is operable for retracting a latch bolt assembly (22). The manual actuator (28) includes an inner hub (31) and an outer hub (29). The mortice latch assembly (1) also includes a lock mechanism (32) including an inner pawl (34) and an outer pawl (33) which are adjustable on operation of a motor (37).
Claims (34)
1. A mortice lock assembly for use with a door including a housing, a bolt movable relative to the housing between an extended position and a retracted position, a manual actuator including an inner hub and an outer hub each being operable from inner side and outer side of the housing respectively to move the bolt from at least the extended position to the retracted position, a lock mechanism including an inner pawl and an outer pawl which are adjustable relative to the inner hub an outer hub respectively and a powered actuator for adjusting the condition of the inner pawl and the outer pawl between a locked condition in which the respective inner hub or outer hub is rendered inoperable and an unlocked condition in which the respective inner hub or outer hub is rendered operable, the powered actuator includes one motor having an output that causes rotation about a powered hub axis when the motor is operable, wherein the inner pawl is adjustable relative to the outer pawl on operation of the powered actuator.
2. A mortice lock assembly according to claim 1 including a power storage within the housing which supplies power to at least the powered actuator.
3. A mortice lock assembly according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the motor includes a drive shaft that rotates about the powered hub axis when the motor is energised.
4. A mortice lock assembly according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the lock mechanism includes a drive arrangement intermediate the powered actuator and the inner pawl and outer pawl.
5. A mortice lock assembly according to claim 4 wherein the drive arrangement includes a cam that is rotatable on operation of the powered actuator to adjust the condition of one or both of the inner pawl and outer pawl.
6. A mortice lock assembly according to 5 wherein the drive arrangement includes an inner cam follower and outer cam follower which each interact with the cam to be movable between a first position and a second position on rotation of the cam.
7. A mortice lock assembly according to claim 6 wherein the inner cam follower and outer cam follower each move linearly between the first position and the second position.
8. A mortice lock assembly according to claim 6 or 7 wherein the lock mechanism includes a biasing arrangement to urge the inner cam follower and outer cam follow towards the first position.
9. A mortice lock assembly according to any one of claims 6 to 8 wherein the cam includes a cam surface, and each of the inner cam follower and outer cam follower each includes a bearing surface over which the cam surface slides as the cam rotates.
10. A mortice lock assembly according to claim 9 wherein each bearing surface includes a bevelled portion over which the cam surface slides in order to move both the inner cam follower and outer cam follower to the second position.

A mortice lock assembly according to any one of the preceding claims wherein inner hub and outer hub are mounted relative to the housing for rotation about a hub axis and the inner pawl and outer pawl are mounted relative to the housing for rotation about a pawl axis, whereby the hub axis and pawl axis are parallel.
12. A mortice lock assembly according to claim 11 wherein the lock mechanism includes a pawl shaft on which each of the inner pawl and outer pawl is mounted for rotation thereabouts.
13. A mortice lock assembly according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the power storage includes any form of rechargeable battery or capacitor including any one or more of supercapacitors, ultra capacitors, pseudo capacitors and hybrid capacitors.
14. A mortice lock assembly according to any one of the preceding claims including at least one electrical contact through which power can be supplied from a mains power supply remote from the housing to the power storage.
15. A mortice lock assembly according to claim 14 wherein the lock mechanism can be selected for operation in a fail-safe mode or a fail secure mode during a power failure event in which power is failed to be supplied from the mains power supply to the power storage.

A mortice lock assembly according to claim 15 wherein where the lock mechanism is selected to operate in the fail-safe condition the inner pawl and outer pawl adopts the unlocked condition in the power failure event, and where the lock mechanism is selected to operate in the fail secure condition the inner pawl and outer pawl adopts the locked condition in the power failure event.

A mortice lock assembly according to claim 15 wherein the lock mechanism can be selected to operate in the failsafe condition or fail secure condition for each of the inner pawl and outer pawl individually so that the inner pawl and outer pawl adopt either the unlocked condition or lock condition in the power failure event.

A mortice lock assembly according to any one of claims 15 to 17 including a lock mechanism switch operable to control individually the inner pawl and outer pawl that is adjustable to control the operation of the lock mechanism as either fail safe, fail secure or escape mode whereby in escape mode one of or both of the inner pawl and outer pawl adopt the unlocked condition.
19. A mortice lock assembly according to claim 18 wherein the lock mechanism switch is adjustable from outside the housing.
20. A mortice lock assembly according to claim 18 or 19 wherein the lock mechanism switch is adjustable whilst the housing is installed in or on the door.
21. A mortice lock assembly according to any one of the preceding claims including a monitoring arrangement which monitors any one or more of the operation, condition or positon of the inner hub, outer hub, inner pawl, outer pawl, bolt, or power storage.
22. A mortice lock assembly according to claim 21 wherein the monitoring arrangement monitors each of the inner hub and the outer hub to determine if either of the inner hub or the outer hub has rotated between a first position and a second position.

A mortice lock assembly according to claim 21 or 22 wherein the housing is configured for accommodating a cylinder lock and the bolt is configured for interaction with a cylinder cam of said cylinder lock, wherein the monitoring arrangement monitors movement of the cylinder cam from a first position towards a second position in which it engages with the bolt.

A mortice lock assembly according to claim 23 wherein the monitoring arrangement includes at least one shuttle for interaction with said cylinder cam which moves relative to the housing between a first position which corresponds with the cylinder cam adopting the first position, to a second position as the cylinder cam moves towards the second position.

A mortice lock assembly according to claim 24 wherein the monitoring arrangement includes a monitoring switch which is adjustable between a first position in which a signal is sent to a remote monitoring station being remote from the mortice lock assembly, and a second position whereby the signal is prevented from being sent to the remote monitoring station.
26. A mortice lock assembly according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the bolt is in the form of a bolt assembly including a bolt head and a biasing means for biasing the bolt head towards the extended position.
27. A mortice lock assembly according to claim 26 wherein the bolt head includes a bevelled leading surface.
28. A mortice lock assembly according to claim 26 or 27 including an auxiliary bolt that is movable relative to the housing between a deadlocked and an un- deadlocked position.
29. A mortice lock assembly according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the powered actuator includes no more than the one motor.
30. A mortice lock assembly according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the inner pawl and the outer pawl are each adjustable relative to the inner hub and the outer hub respectively on operation of the powered actuator.
31. A security system for use with a door, the security system including a mortice lock assembly according to any one of the preceding claims configured for connection to a mains power supply, an access control reader for location proximate the door configured for direct or indirect connection to the mains power supply and connection to the mortice lock assembly so that a signal can be sent to the lock mechanism in the event of a security protocol being satisfied.
32. A security system according to claim 31 including a remote monitoring station for connection to at least to the mortice lock assembly, whereby in use the remote monitoring station monitors at least operation of either the inner hub, the outer hub or a cam.
33. A security system according to claim 32 wherein the remote monitoring station includes an audible indictor and or a visual indicator to indicate operation of said at least inner hub or outer hub.
34. A security system according to claim 32 or 33 wherein the remote monitoring station is also configured for connection to the access control reader and includes a data logger to log security protocol data.
