Abstract

system for mitigating electrostatic discharge between a first (10) and a second (11) space vehicle. The system has a propulsion mechanism (17, 18) for maneuvering the first space vehicle (10) in space, a capture mechanism (23) positioned on the first space vehicle (10) for at least temporarily joining the first (10) and second (11) space vehicle, and a mechanism (20) for passively mitigating electrostatic discharge coupled to the first space vehicle (10). The mechanism for passively mitigating electrostatic discharge has one or more resistors (27) and one or more electrically conductive compliant members (26) electrically connected to the one or more resistors. The compliant members are configured such that when the first (10) and second (11) space vehicles are joining, one of the compliant members provides a first physical contact between the space vehicles. Spacecraft in orbit often possess different electrical potentials. When two spacecraft approach each other during docking, a significant risk arises that an electrostatic discharge could occur between the two spacecraft, leading to damage of electrical systems. The invention discloses an improved system and method for mitigating electrostatic discharge between spacecraft.
