Abstract

Prior art problems include failure of the screw element in the area of its tip. The present invention relates to a screw element (1), comprising a threaded shank (2) and a screw tip (4) formed at one shank end and a screw head (5) which is formed at the opposite shank end and has a force-engagement means (7) and with a screw thread (12) running onto the threaded shank (2) and the screw tip (4). The screw tip (4) here has a front tip portion (4a), as seen in the screwing-in direction (Z), tapering towards the screw element end, and a portion (4b) which is formed on the threaded shank and has, as seen in cross section, a polygonal cross section, the envelope circle diameter (dh) of which is greater than a core diameter (dk) of the screw tip (4), and the polygonal cross section has a corner point (15) which lies on the envelope circle of the portion (4b) and in which an end edge surface (9) which is directed radially with respect to a longitudinal centre axis (X-X) with the effect of increasing the diameter ends. The screw tip (4) has a first, tapering tip portion (4a) with a circular cross section and a second, cylindrical tip portion (4c) which is formed between the first tip portion (4a) and the polygonal portion (4b) and has a circular cross section, wherein the screw thread (12) is formed continuously over the first and second tip portions (4a, 4c) of the screw tip (4) without interruption. The core diameter (dk) of the cylindrical second tip section (4c) is smaller at its base in the transition between the second tip portion (4c) and the polygonal section (4b) than the maximum core diameter (ds) of the threaded shank (2).
