Abstract

method of authenticating a user. The method involves receiving or retrieving a request from a first user device for access to a website or access to an application program having an associated operable graphical user interface. A carrier image is generated, the carrier image comprising data identifying the request. The method then involves transmitting or sending website data or graphical user interface data of the application program to the first user device, the website data or graphical user interface data comprising the carrier image. The method receives or retrieves the carrier image data from a second user device, the carrier image data captured by the second user device and the carrier image comprising at least the data identifying the request. The method then authenticates the user to access the website or application program based on the data identifying the request. fying the request.

Claims (20)

  1. CLAIMS1. A method of authenticating a user, comprising the steps of: receiving or retrieving a request from a first user device for access to a website or access to an application program having an associated operable graphical user interface, generating a carrier image, the carrier image comprising data identifying the request, transmitting or sending website data or graphical user interface data of the application program to the first user device, the website data or graphical user interface data comprising the carrier image, receiving or retrieving carrier image data from a second user device, the carrier image data captured by the second user device and the carrier image comprising at least the data identifying the request, and authenticating the user to access the website or application program based on the data identifying the request.
  2. 2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the first user device receives the carrier image and website data or graphical user interface data.
  3. 3. A method according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the first user device displays the website or graphical user interface of the application program.
  4. 4. A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the first user device displays the website comprising the carrier image or graphical user interface comprising the carrier image.
  5. 5. A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the first user device is any one of: a desktop PC, smartphone, tablet, laptop, television, gaming console, or any other programmable device comprising a display screen.
  6. 6. A method according to claim 5 wherein the desktop PC, smartphone, tablet, laptop, television, gaming console, or any other programmable device comprising or operatively connected to a display screen, is used to initiate the request.
  7. 7. A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the website or graphical user interface comprises a reference to the carrier image.
  8. 8. A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the second user device comprises an image sensor.
  9. 9. A method according to claim 8 wherein the second user device captures the carrier image using an image sensor of the second user device.
  10. 10. A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the second user device captures the carrier image from the display screen of the first user device.
  11. 11. A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the second user device stores the captured image in memory.
  12. 12. A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the second user device extracts carrier image data from the captured carrier image.
  13. 13. A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the carrier image data is data representative of the carrier image.
  14. 14. A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the carrier image data is the data representative of the request.
  15. 15. A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the second user device is a smartphone or tablet, or any electronic device comprising an image capture sensor or sensors.
  16. 16. A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the second user device transmits the carrier image data to a remote server.
  17. 17. A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the second user device transmits user data relating to the website or application program.
  18. 18. A method according to claim 17 wherein the user data is login credentials for the website or application program.
  19. 19. A method of storing data within an image, comprising the steps of receiving or retrieving an input image, receiving or retrieving or generating the data, retrieving, receiving, or generating image mask data, wherein the image mask data comprises data indicative of a coding area of the input image, and generating a carrier image based on the input image and the data, wherein the carrier image encodes the data in the coding area of the input image.
  20. 20. A method of decoding carrier image data from a carrier image comprising the steps of receiving or retrieving the carrier image, extracting the carrier image data, and transmitting the carrier image data to a remote device.
