Abstract

drug release device comprising a drug release component and a support is disclosed. The drug release component comprises a TPE block co-polymer (polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene-co-butylene)-block-polystyrene (SEBS)), polypropylene and paraffin oil and has a hardness of 20-90 Shoe A. The drug release component has a higher melt point than the support and is moulded to the support by partial melting of the support. The drug release component is impregnated with the one or more drugs and can be used for drug delivery to animals. The device may be used for drug delivery to the vaginal mucosal membrane of ruminant animals such as cattle for synchronisation of oestrus in a herd.

Claims (16)

CLAIMS :
1. A drug release device sing a drug release component and a support, wherein the drug release component comprises a ic TPE block co-polymer that is polystyreneblock-poly (ethylene-co-butylene)-block-polystyrene (SEBS), polypropylene and paraffin oil; and wherein the drug release component has a hardness in the range of 20-90 Shore A, as measured by a Type A Durometer in accordance with ASTM D2240, and has a higher melt point in the range of about 80 to 250°C than the support with a melt point in the range of about 70-200°C; and wherein the drug release component is moulded to the support by partial melting of the support.
2. The device according to claim 1, wherein the drug release component is impregnated with progesterone.
3. The device according to claim 1 wherein the device further includes one or more non-polymer additives including colouring agents, static dissipative compounds, idants, UV stabilisers, salts, softeners, oils, biological ible plasticizers, mould release agents and fillers.
4. The device according to claim 1, wherein the support is made of material selected from the group consisting of low density polyethylenes, polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride.
5. The device according to claim 1 or 4, wherein the support is in the form of a spine.
6. The device according to claim 1, n the device is configured for insertion into the vaginal cavity of an animal.
7. The device ing to claim 1, wherein the device ses an elongate body extending from a first end to a second end, and two arms attached to and extending from the first end of the elongate body, wherein the two arms have arm tips and are moveable relative to the elongate body.
8. The device according to claim 7, wherein the drug e device is substantially “T” or “Y” shaped in its unrestrained uration such that the arms are le relative to the elongate body in the plane of the “T” or Y” shape.
9. The device according to claim 1, for use as an intra-vaginal implant.
10. The device according to claim 1, for use in cattle.
11. The device according to claim 10, for use in oestrus synchronisation.
12. A method of delivering one or more drugs to an animal, the method comprising the steps of contacting the device according to claim 1, with the vaginal mucosal membrane of the animal for a period of time sufficient to allow the drug to be released from the device to the mucosal membrane, and wherein animal is selected from ruminants including cows, buffalo, sheep and goats and post-gut fermenters including horses, pigs; dogs and cats.
13. Use of the device according to claim 1, to deliver a drug to the vaginal mucosal membrane of a cow for oestrus synchronization.
14. The method of claim 12, or use of claim 13, wherein the device contains progesterone which is released to the mucosal membrane in an amount effective to e a minimum progesterone plasma concentration of 2 ng/mL in blood stream of the animal.
15. The device according to claim 1 or 2, for use in oestrus onisation in a herd of cattle.
16. The device ing to claim 1, wherein the drug release component comprises terone, SEBS, polypropylene, paraffin oil and one or more fillers selected from the group consisting of calcium carbonate and amorphous silica.
