Abstract

An orthotic device (10) for use with a heeled, dress, flat or sport shoe, the device comprising a body portion (25) comprising forefoot and midfoot portions, and a rearfoot portion having a planar surface. A medial arch support (40) is oriented at a medial side of the midfoot portion and is defined by a solid projection in the form of a curved convex prominence extending upwardly superiorly away from the planar surface body portion. A valgus wedge (20) extends continuously anteriorly from a lateral side of the rearfoot portion to a lateral side of the forefoot portion. The valgus wedge (20) is defined by a solid projection extending upwardly superiorly away from the planar surface body portion, extending continuously from a lateral rear foot portion to a lateral forefoot portion of the body, and sloping downwardly inferiorly toward the body portion from a lateral edge of the body portion toward a medial side of the body portion. The valgus wedge is adapted to evert a user’s foot and concentrate the support of the device laterally. In a longitudinal mid region in the midfoot portion of the body portion, the valgus wedge and the medial arch support define first and second high points with a depression located in between the high points. The rearfoot support portion of the device is planar from a medial edge to the lateral edge of the rearfoot portion. Due to the “windlass mechanism”, existing orthotic support designs are not suitable for heel users as they place emphasis on medial arch support which will amplify over-supination. The disclosed orthotic support increases the valgus wedge support in conjunction with medial arch support to overcome these issues.
