Abstract
An electric shearing handpiece including: an electric motor (2) having a gear shaft (18) extending from a power output end thereof; a cutting head assembly (1) having an outer housing (20); a planetary gear assembly (19) coupled to the gear shaft of the motor, the planetary gear assembly driving the cutting head assembly; and an internal fan (6) driven by the motor for drawing air into the handpiece, the handpiece including a ventilation flow path across the motor and through the cutting head assembly along which an air flow generated by the fan can pass and exit from a front of the handpiece, wherein a threaded connection is provided between the power output end of the motor and the outer housing of the cutting head assembly, wherein the threaded connection between the motor and the outer housing includes a rear section (24) of the outer housing having an inlet opening (23) provided with an internal thread (25), and an external thread (33) provided at the power output end of the motor for cooperating with the internal thread of the inlet opening. The invention provides a relatively compact shearing handpiece with effective ventilation of the motor and cutting head assembly while also minimizing the ingress of foreign matter into the handpiece.
Claims (17)
1. An electric shearing handpiece including: an electric motor having a gear shaft extending from a power output end thereof; a cutting head assembly having an outer housing; a planetary gear assembly coupled to the gear shaft of the motor, the planetary gear assembly driving the cutting head assembly; and an internal fan driven by the motor for drawing air into the ece, the handpiece including a ventilation flow path across the motor and though the cutting head assembly along which an air flow ted by the fan can pass and exit from a front of the handpiece, wherein a threaded connection is ed between the power output end of the motor and the outer housing of the cutting head assembly, and wherein the threaded connection between the motor and the outer housing includes a rear section of the outer housing having an inlet opening provided with an al thread, and an external thread provided at the power output end of the motor for cooperating with the al thread of the inlet opening.
2. An electric shearing ece according to claim 1, wherein the motor includes a plurality of raised ribs located on an outer surface of the motor, the ribs defining ventilation grooves therebetween.
3. An ic handpiece according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the fan is located at an opposing end of the motor to the power output end thereof, and is directly driven by the motor.
4. An electric shearing handpiece according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the fan is a conical fan.

An electric shearing handpiece according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the rear section is at least substantially cylindrical and located at a rear end of the outer g, the rear section at least substantially accommodating therein the ary gear assembly. 18640043_1 (GHMatters) P42599NZ00
6. An electric shearing handpiece ing to claim 5, further including a plurality of splines surrounding the rear section and ting the rear section to the outer housing, the splines defining therebetween ventilation s into the outer housing.
7. An ic shearing handpiece according to claim 6, further including an outer sleeve surrounding the motor and the splines for defining therebetween the ventilation flow path over the motor and between the splines into the outer housing of the cutting head assembly.
8. An electric shearing handpiece according to claim 7, wherein the motor includes a raised rim extending radially from the rear of the motor for engaging notches provided at a rear end of the sleeve.

An electric shearing handpiece according to claim 7 or 8, wherein the handpiece includes an outer cover, and wherein the sleeve includes a substantially annular tooth profile extending substantially around at least a portion of the sleeve for engaging a cooperating tooth profile provided within the outer cover to thereby t relative movement between the sleeve and the outer cover.

An electric shearing handpiece according to any one of the preceding , wherein the planetary gear assembly includes a ity of planetary gears supported within a ring gear, the planetary gears engaging the gear shaft of the motor, each planetary gear being supported by a respective pin shaft to a rotatably supported planet carrier.
11. An electric shearing handpiece according to claim 10, wherein the planet carrier s a crank shaft for driving the cutting head assembly.
12. An electric shearing handpiece according to claim 11, wherein a threaded connection is ed n the planet carrier and the crank shaft. 18640043_1 (GHMatters) P42599NZ00
13. An electric ng handpiece according to and one of claims 10 to 12, wherein the ring gear is tightly fitted into the rical rear section of the cutting head assembly.
14. An electric shearing handpiece according to any one of claims 10 to 13, further including at least one bearing assembly supported within the cylindrical rear section of the cutting head assembly for supporting the planet carrier therein.
15. An electric shearing handpiece according to any one of the preceding claims, further including an outlet socket located at a rear of the handpiece and having an external connecting threaded boss for connecting the outlet socket to a hose through which air to the fan can be ed.
16. An electric shearing handpiece according to claim 15, wherein the hose supports a power line for supplying power to the motor.
