Abstract

An electrolyte solution and a flow cell battery, i.e. a Zinc-Bromide, Vanadium bromide, polysulfide or hydrogen bromide flow cell battery, are included herein. In particular, the electrolyte solution is a zinc bromide electrolyte solution comprising (a) a first quat - quaternary ammonium halide complexing agent - comprising one or more class A quat halides; (b) a second quat halide comprising either (i) one or more of the class A quat halides or (ii) one or more class B quat halides. The disclosed salts are able to complex with elemental bromine so as to reduce the concentration of free diatomic bromine in the electrolyte and have a low cloud point.
