Abstract

The invention relates to plumbing and in particular standard water taps. The washer of a standard water tap may become worn, degraded or otherwise broken due to overtightening of the screw down mechanism. This may result in a leaking tap. To at least partially alleviate this problem, the invention provides a screw-down mechanism for a valve for a tap. The mechanism comprises a screw-down stem located within an internal bore of a valve housing. The base of the stem is received in a valve seat. It is characterised by the stem comprising an upper spline, coaxially mountable on a shaft, the lower portion of the shaft being threaded, a base of the upper spline including a first top disk having a corrugated lower surface, engageable with a second bottom disk having a corrugated upper surface located on the shaft, the corrugated surfaces of the first and second disks being rotatable relative to one another when subjected to a predefined torque. The top disk slips over the bottom disk a corrugation at a time, rotating with the torque and relieving the load and preventing the washer from breaking.
