Abstract
The invention relates to contactless reading of data, particularly in tag units. The invention seeks to resolve inefficient power issues observed in prior art units. Thus, the invention provides an apparatus (A) for contactless identification of a tag unit (GX) having circuitry configured to modify an alternating electromagnetic field (EMTX) within which the tag unit (GX) is located, the apparatus (A) comprising: a transmitter circuit (TX) configured to generate an electric source signal (Ss); a transmitter antenna (TA) connected to the transmitter circuit (TX), configured to receive the electric source signal (Ss) and based thereon emit an alternating electromagnetic field (EMTX) from the apparatus (A); a receiver antenna (RA) configured to register the alternating electromagnetic field (EMTX) and any modifications thereof (EMGX) caused by the presence of a tag unit (GX) within a range of operation from the apparatus (A), the receiver antenna (RA) having at least two loops of antenna coil, a first loop (+) being twisted 180 degrees and in phase opposition to a second loop (-); a receiver circuit (RX) connected to the receiver antenna (RA) and configured to produce an electric detection signal (Sd) in response to the alternating electromagnetic field (EMTX) (EMGX) registered by the receiver antenna (RA); and a processing unit (PU) configured to receive the electric detection signal (Sd), and based thereon, to discriminate identification data of any tag unit (GX) which has modified the alternating electromagnetic field (EMGX), wherein the apparatus (A) further comprises an auxiliary antenna (SWA) configured to receive the emitted alternating electromagnetic field (EMTX), to generate an aiding or reference signal component (Sa) and to forward the aiding or reference signal component (Sa) to the processing unit (PU), and the processing unit (PU) is configured to discriminate the identification data (GXid) by utilizing the aiding or reference signal component (Sa) registered by the auxiliary antenna (SWA), which originates from the unmodified alternating electromagnetic field (EMTX).
