Abstract

Disclosed is a process for establishing an aerobic granular sludge reactor, said process comprising the step of seeding a reactor with an active biomass comprising fragmented aerobic sludge granules, wherein the fragmented aerobic sludge granules are the result of fragmentation of aerobic sludge granules using a fragmentation means which retains at least some of the structure of the aerobic sludge granules and substantially retains the aerobic granule functionality of the aerobic sludge granules.
