Abstract

A multilayer timber panel of a laminated sandwich including top and bottom layers and at least one intermediate layer, the layers being rectangular and having a pair of shorter edges and a pair of longer edges, is layered up so that the predominant grain direction of the timber in an edge region along the shorter edges of the top and bottom layers is substantially parallel to the shorter edges and the predominant grain direction of the timber in at least an edge region along the longer edges of the top and bottom layers is substantially parallel to the longer edges. A building frame element 18 which is a portal frame comprising a pair of spaced apart columns, an upper beam and a lower beam, can be formed from the multilayer timber panel by removing a central portion from the panel that is cut out of the panel once the rectangular panel is formed. A building skeletal frame can be constructed using these portal frames and using the cut out central portions 19 as floors.
