Abstract
A method for modifying a vehicle with a retro-fit fuel system where the unmodified vehicle includes a direct injection engine configured to run on petroleum, and the system modifies the vehicle to also operate on a fuel such as LPG is disclosed. A mixing vessel is also described along with operational parameters. The system supplies fuel to the engine by combining a first fuel and a second fuel to form combined fuel; supplying the combined fuel to the engine; and varying the rate at which the combined fuel is supplied to the engine to suit the relative proportions of the first fuel and the second fuel in the combined fuel. A method of priming the system using cues regarding possible use of the engine is also disclosed to reduce waiting time before ignition while vaporous flues is flushed from the fuel supply system. A method of modifying a fuel pump is also described to enable the system to return unused fuel and cool the pump. A fuel injection pump for LPG is also described, the pump has an inlet (11a) and outlet (11b) and includes a return, bypass, or purge line attached upstream/on the suction side of the pump to remove vapour and keep the temperature of the LPG low enough so that it remains liquid.
