Abstract

Method for processing viscous biomass to produce a product, for example fermentable sugars. The method includes providing a slurry at a first temperature and a first pressure, wherein said slurry comprises a liquid carrier and a solid; increasing said first pressure to a second pressure of about 50 psia to about 1250 psia, thereby forming a first pressurized slurry; injecting a fluid into said first pressurized slurry, thereby forming a fluid injected slurry, wherein said fluid-injected slurry has a second temperature greater than said first temperature, and said second temperature is about 100 °C to about 300 °C; and increasing said second pressure to a third pressure of greater than about 1250 psia, thereby forming a second pressurized slurry.
