Abstract

A planar magnetic speaker is disclosed. The speaker makes use of Halbach arrays to produce a stronger magnetic field (32) which increases the sensitivity of the device for any given individual magnet strength. Modules (66) are assembled from opposing Halbach arrays in holders (40) .The speaker as whole is assembled from the modules attached to a frame (50) having a film (60) bearing conductors (62) suspended there between. The connection pattern (77, 79) of the conductors is such that the alternating magnetic field direction of the Halbach arrays is countered so that the film is uniformly deflected on application of an electric current. The conductors are arranged in pairs (78) which are aligned with the Halbach array so that current direction is reversed in each successive pair across the film to match the magnetic field reversal across the array. A system of swappable speaker drivers is also disclosed.
