Abstract

Disclosed are a container (15) and sample punch (11) for use with a tissue sampling device to retain a tissue sample (30) and an apparatus for tissue sampling. The disclosure notes that animal tissue samples are often taken to test DNA of animals and multiple samples can be taken at one time. It is important that there is no cross-contamination between samples and that the tissue sampling device only causes the animal to suffer a minimum amount of trauma. The container (15) and sample punch (11) comprise a container body (21) and an anvil (22). The container body (21) retains the tissue sample (30) and includes an open end (16). The anvil (22) is located at the open end (16) of the container body (21). An external portion of the container (15) has a shape to facilitate support of the container during excision of the tissue sample (30). The sample punch (11) has an excising edge shaped and dimensioned to be driven against the anvil (22) to excise the tissue sample (30).
