Abstract

The disclosure relates to a process for extracting a hydrocarbon fuel product from a carbonaceous material selected from oil sand, oil shale, pulverised coal and carbonate rock wherein the process comprises the step contacting the carbonaceous material with a metal and/or a metal ion containing compound selected from the group consisting of an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, aluminium, iron and zinc that reacts with water to produce hydrogen in the presence of water under conditions suitable for initiating an exothermic reaction and providing the hydrocarbon product, wherein contacting the carbonaceous material with a metal and/or a metal ion containing compound is done is done in the presence of an oxidising agent selected from sodium nitrate and hydrogen peroxide and an alkaline agent, preferably sodium hydroxide.
