Abstract

594546 An electrochemical cell (10) is disclosed. The cell comprises a cylindrical container (14), having a closed bottom end, a sidewall and an open end, an electrode assembly (60) and an electrolyte disposed within the container, and an end assembly (30) positioned within the open end. The end assembly comprises a vent assembly (36), a cover (32), a positive temperature coefficient safety device [PTC] (34), and an annular gasket (40) disposed between the container and the end assembly. The gasket has an inner annular protrusion (46) that is substantially the same height, in an axial direction, as the PTC, and surrounds the PTC such that the innermost edge of the protrusion either abuts or is in close proximity to the outermost edge of the PTC. This arrangement protects the PTC from expanding due to compression during sealing and allows thermal expansion of the PTC during activation.
