Abstract

A diaphragm valve which includes a hollow body having one port to connect a hydraulic or pneumatic system to the interior of the body of the valve and another port to the interior of the body of the valve. The valve includes a diaphragm formed from a relatively softer material being movably mounted within the interior of the body and normally closing the one port, the diaphragm including side walls and a thin flexible annular skirt extending from the periphery of the diaphragm and integrally formed with a major part of the body of the diaphragm, the distal edge of the skirt being sealingly retained around a cavity behind the diaphragm, to movably mount the diaphragm within the interior of the body of the valve so that the diaphragm moves by flexing and/or folding of the skirt. The valve includes a guide pin extending through the cavity and an opening of the diaphragm and a guide bush of relatively harder material than the softer diaphragm retained within the opening and around the guide pin to form a channel there between. The channel traverses through the diaphragm from the port into the cavity behind the diaphragm such that when the pressure in the cavity behind the diaphragm falls below the pressure on the other side of the diaphragm, the diaphragm and bush will move away from the one port along the pin to open the one port to the interior of the body of the valve and will move to close the one port when the pressure in the cavity behind the diaphragm is equalised with the pressure on the other side of the diaphragm.
