The continuation of the specification should be upon paper of the same size as this form, on one side only, with the lines well spaced and with a margin of 2.5 cm on the left hand part of the paper. The completion of the description should be followed by the claim or claims numbered consecutively. (See note below.) The specification must be signed at the end) NOTE.-The claims must relate to a single invention, must be clear and succinct, and must be fairly based on the matter disclosed in the specification. They should form in brief a dear statement of that which constitutes the invention. Applicants should be careful that their claims include neither more nor less than they desire to protect by their patent. Any unnecessary multiplicity of claims or prolixity of language should be avoided. Claims should not be made for the efficiency or advantages of the invention.
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY OFFICE OF N.Z. 11 JAN 2010 RECEIVED Economic i Development For assistance completing this form please call 0508 4 IPONZ (0508 447 669) Received at IPONZ on 12 February 2010 Catch For Hinged Doors Technical Field: This invention relates to door catches and comprises a catch device which is mountable on the soffit of building eaves, ceilings or in other places above door height, to hold in an open position, hinged doors.
Background of the Invention: This invention attempts to solve the problem of being able to maintain in an open position unaffected by wind, hinged doors particularly where there is no suitable adjoining wall space on which to fix catches or where light fiitings or other objects prevent a door being opened far enough to be secured directly to a wall.
When there is a need to have hinged doors maintained in an open position in windy conditions this invention is useful not only in holding them securely in position it also prevents possible damage if someone loses grip of a door as the door cannot extend any wider than to the position where the door catch has been installed.
Brief Description of Drawings: Figure 1 gives an example of the general layout of a catch custom made to the specific requirements of a particular door and its position when opened.
Figure 2 shows the multi-adjustable version of the same catch which can fit a range of doors, their different heights, thicknesses and their locations when in an open position.
Received at IPONZ on 12 February 2010 2 Detailed Description of the Invention: This invention will now be described with reference to preferred embodiments thereof: The catch comprises a flat bar 1 preferably made of metal of variable length which can be "T" shaped at one end by the addition of flanges 2 to allow load spreading if necessary when it is installed horizontally to the soffit of building eaves, ceilings or other surfaces above door height. Further along the surface to which it is attached, this main bar 1 descends at right angles to a position just below the top of the open hinged door on the outside, at the point where the door is open at least at right angle or slightly wider, to its normal closed position. At this end 3 of the main bar a generally "r" shaped section 4 is attached at its shortest side to the vertical section of the main bar using a bolt and lock nut or other suitable bolting mechanism to create a pivot 5. This allows the generally "r" shaped section 4 to be rotated to a horizontal position so that the top most part of the door frame can rest against the end 3 of the main bar and the generally "r" shaped section 4 can then be turned back to a perpendicular position to hold the door in place against the end 3 of the main bar.
The catch can be either custom made to suit the specific measurements of: (a) the gap between the top of the door frame and the selected mounting site and (b) the desired open position in relation to the mounting site and (c) the door's thickness (see Fig. 1) or can comprise as follows, adjustable components to allow for a range of variations (see Fig 2.) including a much wider door opening than 90 degrees. The close fitting single piece plate 6 holding the long horizontal bar 1 to the surface of the mount has a heavy duty screw 7 which is long enough to penetrate securely any one of the series of compatible indentations 8 along the horizontal bar thereby allowing the position of this bar to be adjusted. The short horizontal top end part 9 of the main vertical section of the catch 10 is secured to the end of the main horizontal bar 1 by a heavy duty screw 11 allowing the vertical section to be rotated to any desired position before being fastened. This Received at IPONZ on 12 February 2010 facility can enable a door to be held open in a position more than 90 degrees to its closed position. 3 The generally "r" shaped section shown in Fig 1 is now made up of two inverted "L" shaped parts 13 &15. The main vertical section 10 has a long centred slot 12 to enable a bolt with a shaft long enough to not only be fastened at the desired height on the main vertical section 10 preferably using a nut with an extra wide flat head but also protrudes sufficiently to provide a pivot for the smaller inverted "L" shaped part 13 which is held in place by a lock nut or other suitable holding method. The smaller inverted "L" shaped part 13 has a centred slot 14 along its top enabling the larger inverted "L" shaped part 15 to be adjusted by means of a bolt to allow for different door thicknesses.
All three surfaces of the catch 16 which can be in contact with the top of the door frame are padded with pvc or other suitable durable material.
If a catch is to be mounted on a soffit, its location is not restricted by having to be fixed to soffit dwangs. It can if necessary, also be attached by installing a minimal thickness but strong, wide base plate to the soffit surface to spread the load or by anchoring a base plate through the soffit surface to other framing which holds the soffit cladding in place.

Claims (3)

Received at IPONZ on 22 Feb 2010 What I claim is:
1. A door catch for holding hinged doors in an open position comprising a catch device mountable on the surface of soffits of building eaves or ceilings with a mounting flange and an arm perpendicular thereto descending to just below the outside of the top of a door and having attached to it a movable part to hold a door in place between the perpendicular arm and the movable part.
2. A door catch as claimed in claim 1 which can also be made of adjustable sections to fit a range of door sizes and locations when in an open position and can allow a door to be secured in an open position greater than 90 degrees to its closed position.
3. A door catch as claimed in claims 1 or 2 which can be attached to the soffits of building eaves by fixing to dwangs or other sub-surface soffit framing or to load spreading material attached to the surface of soffits.
