Abstract

An edging system for concrete flooring, where the edging has plural spaced lift devices, is disclosed. The lift devices are located along the edging at spaced intervals in order to adjust the height of the edging where the lift devices each have an upper extremity which is below the upper surface of the edging. The lift device comprises a base, a lift mechanism and an edging attachment means. The edging attachment means is adapted to engage the edging in order to raise or lower the edging using the lift mechanism and has an adaptor to extend the lift range of the lift device.

BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION Large areas of concrete flooring are usually laid in sections with formwork surrounding each section. The formwork may include lost formwork in the form of metal edging. It is usual to set the thickness of the 10 flooring by setting the height of the edging and screeding the concrete using the edging as a support for screeding implements. There are various methods and apparatus for securing and retaining the metal edging in place but these lack flexibility and adjustability as the prior arrangements may include parts which can interfere with the screeding or other surface finishing 15 equipment and also lack any coarse adjustment for different slab thicknesses.
OUTLINE OF THE INVENTION In one aspect, the present invention resides in a combination of an edging system and partially completed concrete flooring having plural spaced lift devices, the edging having a upper surface and the lift devices being 20 located along the edging at spaced intervals in order to adjust the height of the edging, the lift devices having an upper extremity below the upper surface of the edging the lift device comprises a base, a lift mechanism and an edging attachment means, the edging attachment means being adapted to engage the edging in order to raise or lower the edging using the lift mechanism, the 25 attachment means including an adaptor to extend the lift range of the lift device.
In another aspect there is provided a lift device for setting the height of concrete edging prior to pouring a concrete slab, the lift device having an upper extremity located below the edging the lift device comprises a base, a 3 Received at IPONZ on 12 November2009 lift mechanism and an edging attachment means, the edging attachment means being adapted to engage the edging in order to raise or lower the edging using the lift mechanism, the attachment means including an adaptor to extend the lift range of the lift device.
In still another aspect there is provided a lift device for use in the above system.
Preferably, each lift device comprises a base, a lift mechanism and an edging attachment means, the edging attachment means being adapted to engage the edging in order to raise or lower the edging.
The lift mechanism preferably comprises a threaded rod rotatable using a suitable tool to raise or lower the lift device.
Preferably, the lift device includes an outer cover to protect the thread against damage.
Preferably, the attachment means includes a vertical extension means 15 adapted to fit into the attachment device as the adaptor to extend the lift range of the lift device.
Preferably the lift device includes a ground engaging bracket and a threaded adjustment coupling, the threaded adjustment coupling connecting the ground engaging bracket to the base for horizontal adjustment of the base 20 relative to the ground engaging bracket. Typically the threaded adjustment coupling is housed within a cover to protect it against being fouled by wet concrete.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS In order that the present invention may be more readily understood and 25 be put into practical effect, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings which illustrate the preferred embodiment of the invention and wherein:- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a typical lift device; 4 Received at IPONZ on 12 November2009 Figure 2 is a perspective view of the lift device of Figure 1 shown extended to the standard lift range; Figure 3 shows an extension adapter fitted to the lift device, while Figure 4 shows the range with the extension added.
Referring to the drawings, there is illustrated a lift device 10 having a base 11, and a lift housing 12, which includes a lift mechanism comprising a threaded bolt with a nut 13 rotatable relative to the housing 12 and which passes into a base projecting section 14. The section 14 has a nut welded at its top so that upon rotation of the nut 13 with a suitable tool the housing may 10 be raised or lowered in a telescopic fashion relative to base section 14. The housing has an attachment means in the form of a square section 15 operating as a socket and this receives a plug portion 16 which in turn has a threaded portion 17 which fits into an edge rail 18. A pin 19 passes through mating holes in the socket and the plug to keep them together. 15 The housing 12 includes a slot 20 and the internal section 14 is braced by a brace 21, the slot 20 allowing the housing to move up and down around the brace connection to the internal section 14.
The base includes an angle section 22 which abuts up against the edge rail 18. The base 11 is held in place by a bracket which is coupled to 20 the base 11 via a threaded bolt for adjustment toward or away from the edge rail 18. The bracket has a hole to receive a stake to hold the bracket in place. A U-shaped cover (not shown) welded to the base 11 or the bracket may conceal the threaded bolt to protect it against being fouled by wet concrete.
It will be appreciated that the highest portion of the lift device 25 comprises the top of the nut 13 or thereabouts in relation to the socket portion 15 and that in use, the upper portion of the lift device is located below the upper surface edge 26 of the metal edge or join so that a screeding tool may pass across the edge and there will be clearance. The screeding tool and the lift device will not interfere.
Received at IPONZ on 12 November2009 The standard range of movement is illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 and in the event it is desirable to have further lift, an adaptor 27 comprising a plate 28, a male portion and a threaded spigot 30 may be fitted into the socket 15 as shown in Figure 4 to provide an extended range for higher lift.
Whilst the above has been given by way of illustrative example of the present invention many variations and modifications thereto will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the broad ambit and scope of the invention as set out in the claims. 6 Received at IPONZ 18/01/2010
