Abstract

A method is disclosed for administering complex item structures for an auction in a distributed computing environment. The method includes the steps of (a) defining at least one complex item and its subassemblies for auctioning to bidders, wherein each complex item includes several levels of subassemblies, (b) building a hierarchy for each complex item and its subassemblies, based on relationships between each complex and its subassemblies, (c) allowing access by a bidder to the hierarchy for each complex item and its subassemblies, for viewing the relationships between each complex item and its subassemblies, (d) receiving competing bids for each complex item and subassemblies from bidders, and (e) selecting at least one winning bid for each complex item and its subassemblies.
