The animal killing apparatus includes an impact rod (17) situated in the bore (3) of the device, a cartridge chamber (9), a firing pin (21) and an automatic triggering mechanism. The automatic triggering mechanism is arranged to trigger the firing pin whenever an animal is located within firing range of the device. Upon triggering the firing pin makes contact with a cartridge (8) in the cartridge chamber (9) causing detonation of the cartridge. Cartridge detonation in turn causes the impact rod (17) to fire, impact the animal's head and thereby kill the animal. After firing the impact rod resets itself via a resilient resetting means.
