Abstract

The batten mounting bracket includes a main body (12) having two mounting arms (14, 15) which are inclined and extend away from each other from a junction region (16). The arms are of different lengths (X, Y), and each mounting arm includes a support surface mounting face (18 and 19) and a batten mounting section along the length of the free edge of each arm by which a batten can be secured to the bracket. When the mounting face of one mounting arm is secured to a support structure the other mounting arm projects from the support structure in an operative position whereby the batten mounting section can receive a batten.

Description

1 4 1 5 0 PATENTS FORM NO. 5 Fee No. 4: $250.00 PATENTS ACT 1953 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION MOUNTING BRACKET We CSR Limited, an Australian Company, of Level 24, 1 O'Connell Street, Sydney, New South Wales, 2000, Australia hereby declare the invention, for which We pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement: P:\WPDOCS\DYS\7639010nz.doc P:\WPDOCS\DYS\spccic\7522360pro.doc-10 September 2001 MOUNTING BRACKET This invention relates generally to brackets for mounting battens, furring channels 5 and the like to a structure such as a building wall or ceiling.
Battens or furring channels are often applied to existing walls of buildings so that a new wall or cladding can be fixed thereto, the new wall overlying the existing wall. This is a relatively simple technique by which a building wall or ceiling can be refurbished. 10 One disadvantage of known systems is that the mounting brackets currently know only enable the batten to be secured at a particular distance from the original wall. This can create problems if the existing wall has warped or become damaged.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved mounting bracket 15 which allows for some versatility in the mounting of battens and the like to a support structure.
According to the present invention there is provided a mounting bracket which is suitable for use in the mounting of a batten or the like to a support structure, the 20 mounting bracket including a main body having two mounting arms which are inclined and extend away from each other from a junction region, each mounting arm including a main structure mounting face which is adapted to be selectively operatively secured to the support structure and a batten mounting section by which a batten can be secured to the bracket. The arrangement is such that when the mounting face of one mounting arm 25 is secured to a support structure the other mounting arm projects from the support structure in an operative position whereby the batten mounting section is adapted to receive a batten. The arms of the bracket extending from the junction region are of a different length so that a batten mounted thereto can be disposed at a selected distance from the support structure.
Preferably, the main body is in the form of an elongated element which is P:\WPDOCS\DYS\spccic\76.VJOIOnzspec.doc-l4 November 2001 51A150 preferably L-shaped, each of the aforementioned arms being defined by a respective arm of the L-shaped body. The bracket body may be formed from any suitable material such as metal and may be formed using any suitable manufacturing technique. In this particular form, the main structure mounting face for each arm is comprised by the outer 5 face of each of the arms of the L-shaped member. Thus, when the mounting face of one arm is operatively attached to the support structure the other arm projects directly out from the support structure generally at about 90° thereto.
Preferably, the batten mounting section in each arm is disposed in the free edge 10 portion of that mounting arm. Preferably, a plurality of batten mounting sections may be provided along each free edge portion of each arm. The batten mounting sections may take any suitable form.
In order to enable a clearer understanding of the invention, drawings illustrating 15 example embodiments are attached, and in those drawings: Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view of a mounting bracket according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a first side elevation of the bracket shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 is an end view of the bracket shown in Figure 1; Figure 4 is a second side elevation of the bracket shown in Figure 1; Figure 5 illustrates how a batten can be secured to the mounting bracket; Figure 6 shows the mounting bracket in a first operative position; and Figure 7 illustrates the mounting bracket in a second operative position.
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY OFFICE OF N.Z. 2 2 NOV 2001 RECEIVED P:\WPDOCS\DYS\spccie\7522360pro.doc-10 September 2001 Referring to the drawings the mounting bracket of the present invention generally indicated at 10 comprises an elongated body 12 formed of metal and which is L-shaped in configuration and comprises two arms 14 and 15 which extend away from each other at 90° from a junction portion 16. The arms of the mounting bracket are of different lengths; that is, length X is shorter than length Y as best seen in Figure 4.
Each mounting arm includes a support surface mounting face 18 and 19 which can be secured directly or indirectly to a support structure 50. The mounting bracket can be secured to the support by means of fastenings 51 such as nails, screws or the like.
Each arm further includes a series batten mounting sections 20 along the length of the free edge of each arm to which a batten 55 may be selectively secured. Figure 5 illustrates how a batten 55 can be secured to the batten mounting section. As shown the batten mounting section 20 includes two slots each being adapted to receive therein a 15 respective lip along opposed side edges of the batten 55. Because of the resilient nature of the material from which the batten is formed, it is adapted to snap fit into fixed engagement with the batten mounting section. The type of batten and co-operating batten mounting section illustrated is only an example of the type of batten and batten mounting section which could be used.
Figures 6 and 7 show the mounting bracket of the invention secured to a support structure in two different orientations. In Figure 6 there is illustrated an arrangement where it has been considered desirable to provide an additional sheet bracing element 56 to the assembly. In this particular arrangement, the shorter length arm 15 is used for 25 mounting the batten. In the arrangement shown in Figure 7 no bracing element is required and as such the longer arm 14 is used for mounting the batten. As will be apparent if the difference in length of the two arms is about the same as the thickness of the bracing elements 56, the batten mounting sections will be approximately the same distance from the support structure. It will be appreciated therefore that the mounting bracket of the 30 present invention provides for a single unit which can be used in different applications.
P:\WPDOCS\DYS\spccic\75223G0pro.doc-10 September 2001 Finally, it is to be understood that the inventive concept in any of its aspects can be incorporated in many different constructions so that the generality of the preceding description is not to be superseded by the particularity of the attached drawings. Various alterations, modifications and/or additions may be incorporated into the various constructions and arrangements of parts without departing from the spirit or ambit of the invention.
