Abstract

The invention provides a power control system for mobile radio units that assists in both battery saving and collision avoidance. A power saving scheme with normally reduced levels of transmission power is used for most transmissions, but on transmission of at least one kind of data, typically signalling data such as channel status data, the power level is substantially increased, preferably to full power. Units that are not part of a call but are within the full power range of units in the call are thereby able to detect that a call is in progress and avoid or reduce the likelihood of causing a collision.
