Abstract

A water heater (10) has a vessel (11) for holding water to be heated, a heating element (12), at least one temperature sensor (21, 22), one or more level sensors (19, 20) and a control circuit (15). The water heater (10) includes a water conditioner (23) which is operable via the control circuit (15) to prevent or reduce the precipitation of lime scale from the water. This is to reduce lime scale build-up within the heater, thereby increasing its efficiency and prolonging its useful life. The water is conditioned by generating a conditioning signal in the water, the conditioning signal being varied in frequency and optionally varied in intensity for greater volumes of water to be conditioned.
