Abstract

The frequency calibration process is carried out by a calibration circuit. The first portion of the calibration (77) is carried out by a Digital Signal Processor/Digital to Analog converter/Voltage Controller Thermal Compensation Oscillator (DSP/DACVCTCXO) arrangement. The second portion (78) is carried out by an Automatic Frequency Controller (AFC) and the third portion (79) is done using the DSP. The calibration can be initiated periodically or by an explicit request by a technician for example. The DSP/DAC/VCTCXO arrangement generates a test modulation signal (71) and sends it to the AFC. The AFC then generates an error signal (72) indicating the deviation of the modulated signal from a reference. The DSP uses this value to then make more precise estimates of adjustments to be made (73) before updating the calibration within a table (74).
