Abstract

A non-destructive method of selecting trees (without needing to fell the tree) for their strength characteristics by measuring along the grain of the tree the modulus of elasticity; overcoming the impreciseness of visual inspection and also avoiding under-grading or over-grading timber. Said method comprising: (i) inserting a spike through any surface material and into the side of a fibrous material of the tree, (ii) creating a sound or shock wave at right angles to the side of the tree, with an input means, at an input point which is apart from the spike, said wave penetrating any surface material and the tree itself and traveling along the tree, (iii) determining the time taken for the sound or shock wave to travel along the tree from its input point to the spike, (iv) comparing said time taken to collected reference information and thus obtaining an estimation of the strength quality of the tree.
