Abstract

The modulus of elasticity (MOE) of a board is determined by striking one end of the board with a pneumatic hammer, and measuring the velocity of the resultant stress waves. This stress wave velocity (SWV) can be used to determine the MOE, which can then be used by a computerized lumber breakdown unit to maximize the value of timber cut from the board. The SWV is measured by a signal acquisition unit 22 that is moved up against one end of a board 50. The distance moved is measured, together with the distance to the other end of the board measured by laser 24. This enables the length of the board to be determined so that the SWV can be measured with the aid of accelerometer in the signal acquisition unit 22 which is moved in to contact with the end of the log.
