The three dimensional filamentous tissue for use as a tendon or a ligament comprises fibroblasts and collagen naturally secreted by the fibroblasts attached to and substantially enveloping a three dimensional filamentous framework composed of a biocompatible non-living material having interstitial spaces bridged by the fibroblasts. The biocompatible non-living material can be a biodegradable material such as cotton, or gelatin or a non-biodegradable material such as a polyamide or a polystyrene.
