Abstract

Provided is a device for culturing pathogenic microorganisms and viruses to conserve laboratory space in a closed culture system. The first aspect of the device is a tangential flow filter system comprising: a) a first tangential flow device comprising: i) a first housing enclosing an interior volume; and ii) one or more filter means separating the interior volume of the first housing into two or more chambers; b) one or more substance addition means in fluid communication with one or more of the chambers of the first tangential flow device; c) a second tangential flow device in fluid communication with one or more chambers of the first tangential flow device, the second tangential flow device comprising: i) a second housing enclosing an interior volume; and ii) one or more filter means separating the interior volume of the second housing into two or more chambers; and d) a fluid exit means in fluid communication with the second tangential flow device. Also provided is a tangential flow filter system comprising a) to d) as described above, and wherein a first set of one or more chambers of the first tangential flow device are connected in loop fluid communication with a first set of one or more chambers of the second tangential flow device such that fluid exiting the first set of one or more chambers of the first tangential flow device flows into the first set of one or more chambers of the second tangential flow device, and fluid exiting the first set of one or more chambers of the second tangential flow device flows in to the first set of one or more chambers of the first tangential flow device.
