Abstract

A barrier (32) to prevent passage of vehicles or animals includes two posts (13) that contain or support mechanisms to raise or lower the barrier (32) vertically as required. When not active, the actual barrier (5) is lowered into a channel inside a frame (7) across the road (3) for protection from wheels or passing vehicles. A portable road barrier has a ramp on each side of the frame so that it may (if lowered) be driven over when in place. One version of barrier is a single horizontal rod, beam, and rope or chain (5) raised or lowered from the posts (13) at both ends. Dependent chains or straps (21-23) and further horizontal beams (15) may be added to form a more effective though collapsible (when lowered) stock barrier. An actuator mechanism raises and lowers the barrier assembly to a height sufficient to cause the road barrier to become closed, or lower the barrier back into the surface of the road. The device may also for example be used to prevent "ram raids" in shops. The barrier serves as a lockable gate and can be controlled by an (remotely controlled) electronic lock.
