Abstract

A dispenser for dispensing metered amounts of fluid or electricity is activated by a store value card. The card is inserted into a reader 31, and the stored value units are downloaded into the dispenser's memory. If there is sufficient value stored on the card, a dispensing valve 12 is opened, or a switch 10 is closed to dispense the fluid or electricity. The consumption of fluid or electricity is monitored and value units subtracted from those stored in the memory. If the dispensing operation is stopped without reinserting the card, then it cannot be restarted without reinserting the same card.
