Abstract
In an optical fibre communication system, signals in two optical fibre lines 502 504, each line has a two stage pumped optical amplifier. The amplifiers take laser pumping signals from at least one set of laser pumps 526, 528. The output from the laser pumps is combined at coupler 522, and a pumping signal is sent via multiplexers 514 and 520 to the first stages 506 and 510 of the optical amplifiers. A similar arrangement of pumping lasers 530, 532 can be used to feed the second stages 508, 510 of the optical amplifier.
