Description

270334 Urmtor Wh» provirton# of taWwi 83 (1) V f —«..»—»— C^rv^Uj-^C,. _ E^vO i'l'-'• " * ;w» £ * ■**' « JMwk- PATENTS FORM 5 PATENTS ACT 1953 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION A WINDOW STAY Number, Dated o\ I, RONALD PERCIVAL DAVIS, a New Zealand citizen, of 77 Breaker B^yjRoad, Seatoun, Wellington, New Zealand do hereby declare the invention for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement. 27033 4 I My present invention comprises a friction pivot joint suitable for use in a friction stay for a window.
My invention provides an improved or at least alternative form of friction pivot joint suitable for use in a window stay.
In broad terms the invention comprises a friction pivot joint between a first member formed of metal and a second member comprising an annular shoulder of the metal material of the body of the first member projecting from the first member, an aperture in the second member whereby the second member is located for pivotal movement about the shoulder, a plastics bushing interposed between the annular shoulder and the second member to prevent direct contaa therebetween, and a fixing means for fixing the joint and applying friction creating pressure thereto extending through the joint and fixed within the shoulder by screwing within the interior of the shoulder and/or within an aperture in the first member below the shoulder, with plastics material of the bushing extending from the shoulder between the second member and part of the fixing means to prevent direct contact therebetween.
A preferred form of the friction pivot joint of the invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1A is a cross-sectional view of the preferred form joint for use between an arm and a metal sash plate, Figures IB and 1C showing steps in assembly of the joint, 27033 Figures 2A, 2B and 2C are views from above for each of Figures 1A, IB and C, Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view through a preferred form button fixing means, and Figure 4 is a view from above of the preferred form button fixing means in the direction of arrow E in Figure 3.
Figure 1A shows in cross-section the preferred form joint of the invention that may be used between an arm and a metal sash plate, for example, of a window stay. The joint comprises an annular shoulder or upstand 17 formed from the metal material of the sash plate 6. The interior 17a of the annular shoulder is threaded for receiving a threaded button 16 as shown in Figures 3 and 4. An annular bushing 18 is placed about the shoulder to prevent direct contact between the shoulder, the arm, and the button.
Figure 1C shows the shoulder on the sash plate before the placement of other components, and Figure IB shows the shoulder with the bushing thereon before the button 16 is inserted home.
The bushing 18 has a base part 18a and an upstand part 18b which is bent over by the button 16 when it is screwed home. 2703 I Figure 2A shows the finished joint from above (without a screw for fixing the stay in place to a window frame or sash), and Figures 2C and 2B are plan views from above corresponding to Figures 1C and IB.
The preferred form button fixing means 16 is shown in Figures 3 and 4 and comprises a flange like top portion 16a and a cylindrical body portion 16b and which is screw threaded as shown. The button preferably has a hollow interior so that a fixing screw for fixing the stay in place to a window frame or sash may be screwed through the joint as shown in Figure 1A. Then the button may also have a hex interior to enable screwing home of the button during forming of the joint with a hex key, and friction adjustment after installation. An advantage of the preferred form pivot joint shown is that because it includes a central aperture, such joints in the frame and sash mounting plates of a window stay can be 'screwed through' with mounting screws. The stay is then secured to the frame and sash of the window at the same point that loads are applied by the stay arms, particularly in casement applications, so that distortion of the frame and sash mounting plates is minimised.
The foregoing describes my invention including a preferred form of the friction pivot joint. Alterations and modifications as will be apparent to those skilled in the art are intended to be incorporated within the scope hereof as defined in the following claims.

Claims (5)

WHAT I CLAIM IS: 270334
1. A friction pivot joint between a first member formed of metal and a second member comprising an annular shoulder of the metal material of the body of the first member projecting from the first member, an aperture in the second member whereby the second member is located for pivotal movement about the shoulder, a plastics bushing interposed between the annular shoulder and the second member to prevent direct contact therebetween, and a fixing means for fixing the joint and applying friction creating pressure thereto extending through the joint and fixed within the shoulder by screwing within the interior of the shoulder and/or within an aperture in the first member below the shoulder, with plastics material of the bushing extending from the shoulder between the second member and part of the fixing means to prevent direct contact therebetween.
2. A friction pivot joint as claimed in claim 1, wherein the fixing means comprises a body portion fixed within the shoulder and a top portion extending substantially radially from one end part of the body portion over the second member.
3. A friction pivot joint as claimed in claim 2, wherein the said body portion of the fixing means is of a substantially cylindrical formation and the said top portion of the fixing means is of a peripheral flange like formation.
4. A friction pivot joint as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, having a hollow centre to allow a fastener to pass through the pivot joint. 270334
5. A friction pivot joint substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings. WEST-WALKER McCABE per: ATTORNEYS FOR THE APPLICANT L / ft*;V '"* 'Snr | i.? nf - 6 -
