The invention relates to ovens, and has as its subject an oven that uses the flue gases of a free-standing wood-burner or similar conventional fuel-burning stove for the purpose of heating the oven.
It has previously been proposed to construct a combination heating device that incorporates a fireplace, cooking plate, and oven chamber within a casing or housing that contains ducting and movable baffles for directing combustion gases from the fireplace to heat the cooking plate and/or oven chamber before the gases pass outwardly through an external flue.
The present invention, however, provides an oven that is designed and adapted for mounting between upper and lower parts of the stove-pipe of a fuel-burning stove, in such a manner that hot gases passing up the stove-pipe also pass around and heat a food-holding compartment of the oven. Such an oven is herein termed a "flue oven".
Particular objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description.
A flue oven, when constructed in accordance with the invention, consists of an oven compartment provided within an externally jacketed box-like oven body that is adapted for mounting between an upper part and a lower part of an upright stove-pipe of a fuel-burning stove in such a manner that hot gases rising from the stove and through the lower part of the stove-pipe pass into the jacket and around the exterior of the oven compartment '

before passing into the upper part of the stove-pipe; wherein the oven body has in one face thereof an oven opening that communicates with the oven compartment, and carries on its same face an oven door that is movable so as to open and close the oven opening.
A flue oven constituting one exemplification of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the flue oven, showing the oven mounted between upper and lower parts of the stove-pipe of a fuel-burning stove;
Figure 2 and 3 are, respectively, a side elevation and a front elevation of the flue oven, showing adjoining parts of the stove-pipe between which the oven is mounted; but without the oven door shown in Figure 1.
In Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings, the direction of flow of hot gases from the stove through the stove-pipe and around the oven body is indicated by arrows alone (without associated reference numeraIs).
As shown in the drawings, the flue oven (indicated generally by the reference numeral and arrow 1 in Figure 1 of the drawings) has an oven compartment 2 (Figure 3) provided within an externally jacketed box-like oven body 3 that is adapted for mounting between a lower part 4 and an upper part 5 of an

upright stove-pipe of a fuel-burning stove 6 (Figure 1), in such manner that hot gases rising from the stove 6 and through the lower part 4 of the stove-pipe pass into the jacket of the oven body 3, and around the exterior of the oven compartment 2,
before passing into the upper part 5 of the stove pipe.
The oven body 3 has in its front face an oven opening 7 that communicates with the oven compartment 2. On its same face, the oven body 3 carries an oven door 8 (shown in Figure 1 only) that is movable on a mounting hinge 9 so as to open and close the oven opening 7.
The jacketing of the oven body 3 is provided by constructing the oven body 3 of two box-like metal casings 10,11 (Figures 2 and 3) of similar proportions, each open at one end, and one of smaller dimensions than the other; the smaller casing (10)
being mounted within the larger (11), with their open ends in the same plane, and with their corresponding side and end walls equidistantly spaced from each other so as to provide an air-space (12) that surrounds the inner casing 10 on its four side walls and end wall.
At their co-planar open ends the casings 10,11 are conjoined, and the air-space 12 between them enclosed, by a. peripheral metal flange, or collar, 13 (Figure 1) that extends between the end portions of the nested casings 10,11 and is welded or otherwise secured thereto so as to hold the two casings in their nested and equidistantly spaced condition, and at the same time close and seal the air-space 12 between them at that end (for

26 4 0.ra convenience hereinafter referred to as the "outer end") of the oven body 3.
The outer casing 11 thus forms a jacket that encloses the inner casing 10 in a spaced relationship thereto; and defines the air-space 12 that separates their parallel walls.
The oven door 8 is hingedly mounted at the outer end of the oven body 3, so as to be turnable to close and open the oven opening 7 at the adjacent end of the oven compartment 2. A suitable gasket or other seal (not shown) is provided around the inner edge of the oven door 8 and/or the peripheral flange or collar 13 at the outer end of the oven body 3, so as to provide a seal between the door 8 and the outer end of the oven body 3 when the door 8 is closed.
The oven door 8 is fitted with a suitable locking handle and latch 14 (Figure 1) for securing the oven door 8 in its closed position, and for opening it, as and when desired.
The interior of the oven compartment 2 is fitted with runners 15 (Figures 2 and 3) for supporting racks and/or slides, trays, or the like on which items to be heated or cooked can be supported when placed within the oven compartment 2.
The outer casing 11, which forms the outside of the oven body 3, is adapted for mounting between the parts 4 and 5 of the stove pipe with which the flue oven is to be used, so that its outer end - the end on which the oven door 8 is carried - is in a
substantially vertical plane at the front end of the oven compartment 2, with the latter compartment itself extending horizontally within the oven body 3.
The mounting of the oven body 3 between the two parts 4,5 of the stove-pipe is also effected in such a way as to allow hot gases rising from the stove 6 through the lower part 4 of the stove-pipe to enter and flow through the air-space 12 between the casings 10,11 and thus around the outer surface of the inner casing 10, before passing into and through the upper part 5 of the stove-pipe.
Thus, by heat transfer through the inner casing 10, the oven compartment 2 is heated, and food placed within it is warmed or cooked.
To the ends and for the purposes just described, and as shown in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings, the outer casing 11 of the oven body 3 is provided with an inlet aperture 16 in its lower horizontal wall and with an outlet aperture 17 in its upper horizontal wall (being the two walls of the outer casing 11 that are horizontally disposed when the oven body 3 is mounted as aforesaid).
The inlet and outlet apertures 16,17 are in vertical alignment with each other and with the adjacent ends of the two parts 4,5 of the stove-pipe when the oven body 3 is mounted as aforesaid. The diameters of the apertures 16,17 and the internal diameter of the stove-pipe parts 4 and 5, are the same or nearly so.

The means used to mount and secure the oven body 3 between the adjacent ends of the two stove-pipe parts 4,5 will be determined to some extent by the materials used in the construction of the oven body 3 and stove-pipe parts 4,5. Conventionally those items will all be of metal, and in that case their securement as aforesaid will normally be effected by welding or brazing around their contiguous edges or portions.
Other conventional methods and means may be used for so mounting and securing the oven body 3, so long as they do not permit the escape of hot gases or other combustion products during their passage into, through, and out of the air-space 12 surrounding the oven compartment 2 within the oven body 3.
In particular, the mounting of the oven body 3 between the lower and upper parts 4 and 5 of the stove pipe may be effected through the medium of a pair of tubular connector pieces (not shown in the drawings) that are of the same internal diameter as the stove pipe parts, and are gas-tightly affixed at one end, one to the lower and one to the upper horizontal wall of the outer casing 11 of the oven body 3, around the inlet aperture 16 and the outlet aperture 17 respectively.
The connector pieces thus project upwardly and downwardly from the upper and lower horizontal walls of the oven body's outer casing 11. Connection of the upper and lower parts of the stove pipe to the upper and lower connector pieces is then effected by welding or brazing in situ, during installation of the flue oven in the premises where it is to be used.
