Usually such detergent compositions are administered in one of three ways -

(a) diluted in water via the water supply (e.g. water troughs, and diluting pumps into a water reticulation system)

(b) by application direct to the pasture (with or without dilution) e.g. by spraying to thereafter be eaten by the animal and

(c) by oral administration either alone or after dilution with water (e.g. as a drench, stock lick or the like).

It is also known to provide mineral supplements to animals. Here however there is a need to exercise considerable care since with some minerals (for example, selenium) there is a clear deficiency in pastures through much of New Zealand of the mineral but an oversupply of the mineral is counter productive in that it is highly toxic to animals. Mineral deficiencies can also be induced, eg. Copper level in pasture is adequate but high Mo and S in such pasture will cause deficiency in the animal. Therefore any formulation of minerals desirably should be one that exhibits a stability in storage such that over a period of storage time equal quantities of the liquid (if a liquid) will provide an equal dose of the trace element.

The present invention is directed to a storage stable liquid anti-bloat/mineral supplement composition that at least provides the public with a useful choice over pre-

-2-

2392

existent anti-bloat compositions or pre-existent mineral supplement compositions yet which tends to minimise discrepancy in dosage of minerals notwithstanding extended storage times.

Accordingly the present invention relates to a storage stable liquid anti-bloat/mineral supplement composition comprising:

(a) at least one detergent useful for preventing and/or treating bloat,

(b) optionally at least one alcohol and/or a glycol,

(c) at least one mineral, each mineral being in a compound form freely soluble in (i) the detergent or at least one detergent of the detergents of (a) and/or (ii) the optional at least one alcohol and/or glycol of (b),

the composition being substantially free of water.

Preferably said composition includes less than one percent W/W water. The system may include chelated forms of a mineral or minerals.

Preferably said component (a) being at least one detergent is one or a mixture of several anti-bloat detergents/surfactants selected from:

(i) Bi-functionally initiated polyalkylene block copolymers, commonly known as pluronics, with an idealised formula:

HO-(-CH2CH20-)a-(-CHCH3CH20-)b-(-CH2CH20-)c-H , and preferably in particular pluronics produced from a polyoxypropylene hydrophobe with a mean molecular weight of 1750, and oxyethylene end-groups made up with 10%, 20% or 40% by weight of the total molecule (e.g. L61, L62, L64).

Also any acid or ester derivatives of the above.

(ii) alcohol ethoxylates, with idealised formula:

^39212

R0-(-CH2CH20)a-H where R is an alkyl radical of 1-20 carbon atoms, that may be linear (e.g. Terics 10A5, 12A6, 12A7, 15A11, 12A23) or branched (e.g. Terics 13A9).

Also any acid or ester derivatives of the above.

(iii) alcohol alkoxylates, with idealised formula:

RO-(-CHCH20)A-(CH2CH20)B-H

ch3

where R is an alkyl radical of 6-20 carbon atoms, that may be linear or branched (e.g. Teric 18M).

Also any acid or ester derivatives of the above.

(iv) amine ethoxylates, with idealised formula

R-N-(CH2CH2OH)2 or

(CH2CH20-)A-H

R-N \

(CH2CH20-)B-H

where R is typically a carbon radical of 18 atoms (e.g.

Teric 18M5, 18M20).

Also any acid or ester derivatives of the above.

(v) alkylphenyl-polyoxyalkyl ethers, that is, alcohol ethoxylates and alcohol alkoxylates derived from aromatic alcohols.

(e.g. nonyl-phenyl-polyoxyethylene (-9-) ether, known as "Marlophen 89".

-4-

^39212

Also any acid or ester derivatives of the above.

(vi) lime soap dispersers, that is the product formed on treating lime soap with EDTA (ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid).

Also any acid or ester derivatives of the above.

In some preferred forms an alcohol or a mixture of several alcohols (and/or glycol) is present as part (b). For example, methanol, ethanol, propanol and/or indeed even a glycol such as propylene glycol may be present

Preferably the preferred mineral compositions are alcohol soluble minerals which are either elemental, oxides/hydroxides, acids/bases, salts, complexes or a mixture of the foregoing.

Preferably the mineral forms are selected particularly from the elements Cu, Se, Co, I, Zn, Mn, Fe, Mo, and Mg.

Possible examples include -Elemental la

Salts

CoCl2.6H20 CuC12.2H20 KI03

KI (all alcohol soluble)

MnS04

ZnCl2

-5-

<?39

Mo02C12 FeBr2

MgCl2.6H20 Mgl2

MgS04.6H20

Oxides

Se02

Se03

Acids

H2Se03

Complexes

Co(acetate)2.4H20

Co(ethylenediamine)3

The ideal ranges and inter-relationship of the various components is preferably determined by the following factors -

(i) The composition is to contain sufficient minerals as to supply a useful quantity of mineral to the animal when treating for bloat (for example say 5 to 100% of the daily need of an animal for that trace mineral).

fii) Bloat control dose (preferably for total protection) will cover the range of approximately 3ml to 30ml of the detergent or detergent mixtures in the product (iiflAdministered to the bloat prone ruminants (for example cattle or deer) usually on a daily or twice daily basis (or semicontinuous by water supply) or to the animals prior to the ruminant eating bloat risk pastures or feed.

fiv) The bloat product is to contain minerals in a quantity such that the daily or twice daily dose (3-30ml) of product will supply up to 100% of the daily need of the lactating cow for those minerals, preferably taking into account possible antagonistic mineral interaction such that the mineral requirement is higher.

For example daily Cu need is approximately 50mg/day which is sufficient to prevent deficiency excluding Mo and S induced Cu deficiency in a 400kg lactating cow producing 20KG of milk per day. Under the influence of Mo and S the daily need for Cu may need to increase manifold.

For example also, daily Se need is 0.5mg per day for a 400kg cow producing 20KG of milk per day. (Recent verterinary experience indicates that levels up to 3mg or even higher may be required).

For example daily Cobalt need is 800^g for a 400kg cow producing 20KG of milk per day.

For example also, daily iodine need is 7.5mg for a 400kg cow producing 20KG of milk per day, such iodine being sufficient to prevent goitagen induced deficiency.

The present invention also relates to the use of compositions in accordance with the present invention either as formulated so as to be storage stable or subsequent to water dilution thereof prior to administration thereof.

Preferably the product is administered in any of the ways previously identified.

The invention also consists in the formulation of a composition of the present invention said method

(A) where no alcohol and/or glycol is present comprising the mixing together of parts (a) and (c) and

(B) where at least one alcohol and/or glycol is present preferably mixing at least part of (c) components with at least part of (b) prior to mixing with (a).

Examples of preferred formulations of the composition will now be given -Formulation 1

(i) Pluronic L62

(i) Pluronic L64

(v) Marlophen 89

Antifoam A emulsion food grade

Mineral Pre Mix

Copper Chloride Dihydrate BP

Cobaltous Chloride BP (CoCl2.6H20)

Elemental Iodine

Selenium Dioxide

Ethanol

Propylene Glycol

Dyes CI Food Blue (CI 42090)

% w/w

17.577

0.210

0.491

0.011

26.354

54.574

0.783

g/litre

520-00 100-00 401-00 0.15

38.25

Formulation 2

Marlophen 89 Pluronic L62 Teric 12 A 9 Propylene Glycol Antifoam A

g/litre

300.00 500.00 100.00 107.10 0.50

Mineral Premix

Copper chloride dihydrate B.P

Cobaltous Chloride BP (CoCl2.6H20)

Elemental Iodine

Selenium Dioxide

Ethanol

Propylene

% w/w

17.577

0.210

0.491

0.040

26.354

54.545

38.25

-8-

<>39212

Dye CI Food Blue (CI 42090) 0.783

Formulation 3

Same as 2 but with 0.011% w/w selenium dioxide and 54.574% w/w propylene glycol in the mineral premix being the low selenium version of Formula 2

1. PLURONIC is a registered Trade Mark of BASF - Wyandotte Corporation, USA.

2. MARLOPHEN is a registered Trade Mark of Huls.

3. ANTIFOAM A and ANTIFOAM AF are Tradenames of Dow Corning, USA

Formulation 1 has already been shown to have a ambient temperature shelf life of at least 19 months and an accelerated (50°C) shelf life of at least 6 months.

The inclusion of water in the formulation severely reduces the shelf life of the product and preferably the amount of water present is restricted to an absolute minimum if not avoided altogether. The effect of any significant inclusion of water is to lead to stratification of the product under storage or the depositing or precipitation out of some of the mineral constituents. This means a likelihood of inconsistent mineral administration.

The inclusion of the alcohol makes it possible to solubilise the mineral content of the composition in the alcohol prior to admixture thereof with the detergent or detergents. Where no alcohol is to be included then the solubilization is directly of the minerals or mineral into the detergent and, of course, this is a possibility even when an alcohol or glycol is included.

-9-

A Preferred Commercial Formulation

The composition contains lOlOg/litre of ethoxylated non ionic detergents (nonyl phenyl ethoxylate and ethoxylate propoxylate ethoxylate alcohol mixtures) and four commonly deficient trace elements (2500mg/litre copper, 20mg/litre cobalt, 188mg/litre iodine, 2.99mg/litre selenium). At a 10ml dose given twice daily the composition will supply 50% of the Copper Cobalt and Iodine and 13% of the Selenium requirements of a lactating dairy cow under most grazing conditions.

"Suggested Directions for Use:

1. Treatment for bloat should commence 2-3 weeks before the bloat season, and be continued throughout the season. Ensure cattle swallow the bloat drench by using a long smooth drenching nozzle while holding the cow's head back.

2. Bloat severity will vary between mild and severe due to pasture species, growth rates, time of the year, weather and individual cows susceptibility. Choose a dose suited to the conditions. Increase the dose if bloat is still occurring in the herd and closely observe the herd when the dose is reduced at the onset of milder bloat conditions.

L Routine Drenching (Bloat Prevention):

Drench twice daily with 5-15ml of composition diluted in water.

-10-

<-392

Dilution Chart

i : Diluted Dose Rate Per Cow (ml)

Composition

Dilations (Bloat to Water)

Dose Per Cow

1:Z

: 1:4 v;

L6

'■ 1:8

1:10

Mild Risk

Sml

14

24

35

45

55

Moderate Risk

7ml

20

35

50

63

77

High Risk

10ml

30

50

70

90

110

Severe Risk

15ml

45

75

105

135

165

2 . To Relieve Bloated Cattle (Curative):

Quickly dose bloated cattle with 30ml of composition diluted in 50-200ml of water. The more water added the more rapid the control. Caution: Higher doses may be toxic.

3 . Trough Treatment

(a) Initial Charge: Add 30ml of composition (premixed with water) per 100 litres of trough water.

(b) Maintenance of Trough Strength: Add 30ml of composition (premixed with water) per 10 cattle twice daily (for small troughs add three times daily). Ths must be done before cattle have access to the water. Ensure stock only have access to treated water. This method may not be effective, especially during wet weather when water intake may be reduced.

Magnesium Supplementation:

To aid in the prevention of grass staggers and to provide magnesium supplementation for milk production response follow these mixing instructions.

Using Magnesium Chloride: Thoroughly mix 1 litre of composition to 4 litres of cold

-11-
