COMPLETE SPECIFICATION "RADIAL TIRE FOR TRUCKS AND BUSES"
-f>WE SUMITOMO RUBBER INDUSTRIES, LTD. of No.1-1,
Tsutsuicho 1-chome, Chuo-ku, Kobe-shi, Hyogo, Japan, a Japanese company,
hereby declare the invention, for which -I/we pray that a patent may be granted to iae/us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:-
1A 214120
The present invention relates to a radial tire for vehicles, particularly trucks and buses, which is improved in wet-grip performance and resistance to uneven wear.
Usually radial tires for trucks and buses have a tread of rib pattern formed by longitudinal grooves running in the circumferential direction so that they have an extended tread life, good wear resistance, and stable maneuverability when used at high speeds under high load.
Tires with a tread pattern of this kind have some problems. Since the diameter of the central rib differs from that of the shoulder rib, slipping takes place on the shoulder rib when the tire turns. This leads to local wear of the shoulder rib and insufficient water discharge on the road. Thus these tires are poor in wet grip performance.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a radial tire for vehicles, particularly trucks and buses, which has improved resistance to uneven wear and wet grip performance, while maintaining the long tread life, wear resistance, and high-speed maneuverability inherent in the rib pattern tire.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a radial tire for trucks and buses which has a tread pattern with the tread divided into two shoulder ribs and two central ribs by three longitudinal main grooves running in the circumferential direction of the tire, each of said central ribs being substantially halved in the
widthwise direction by a longitudinal narrow groove running in -the circumferential direction of the tire and also being divided in the circumferential direction of tire by eipes extending between the longitudinal narrow grooves and the longitudinal main grooves from one groove to the other.
Brief Description of the Drawings:
Fig. 1 is a partial plan view showing the tread of the tire according to one embodiment of this invention.
Gl» G2, G3 ... Longitudinal grooves gl ... Longitudinal narrow groove RC ... Central rib RS ... Shoulder rib S •.• Sipes T ... Tread
In what follows, we will explain an example of this invention with reference to the drawing. The tread (T) is divided into two shoulder ribs (RS) and two central ribs (RC) by three longitudinal main grooves (61# 62, 63)
running in the circumferential direction of the tire. The main longitudinal groove (62) is formed along the tire equator, and each half divided by 62 is further equally divided into the shoulder rib (RS) and the central rib (RC) by Gl and G3.
O
" 3 " 214120
In each of the central ribs (RC) is formed the zigzag longitudinal narrow groove (gl) which runs in the circumferential direction of the tire. The width (2.1) of the longitudinal narrow groove (gl) should preferably be 0.2 to 2% of the width (TW) of the tread. Each of the central ribs is divided in the circumferential direction of the tire by sipes (SI, S2) which extend from the longitudinal narrow groove (gl) to the longitudinal main grooves (Gl, G2, G3). The width of the sipes (Si, S2) should preferably be smaller than 0.8 mm, and their depth should preferably be 50 to 100% of that of the longitudinal main groove. The interval (£ 2) of the sipes in the circumferential direction of the tire should preferably be 15 to 35% of the tread width (TW).
Since the longitudinal narrow groove (gl) is a continuous groove running in the circumferential direction of the tire, it functions as a water channel when the tire runs on a wet road. The sipes (Si, S2) open when the tread contacts the road and close when the tread leaves the road. The repeating open-close actions cut the water film, improving the wet grip performance. The longitudinal narrow groove (gl) and the sipes formed on the central ribs lower the stiffness of the central ribs. This reduces the slipping of the shoulder rib resulting from the difference in diameter of the shoulder rib and the central rib, and hence reduces uneven wear that takes place on the shoulder rib.

As mentioned above, the tire of this embodiment of the invention has a rib pattern having longitudinal main grooves running in the circumferential direction of the tire, characterized in that each of the central ribs is provided with a longitudinal narrow groove and sipes connecting it to the longitudinal main groove. This tread pattern is effective not only in water discharge but also in reducing the stiffness of the central rib. The latter effect prevents the slipping of the shoulder rib that takes place during travelling, and hence reduces the uneven wear of the shoulder rib.
Although this invention has been described by way of example and with reference to one embodiment thereof it is to be understood that modifications or improvements may be made thereto without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
