Description

2 074 63' Under the provisions of P.eg^ lation 23 (i) the Specification has been ante-datdi! to 19/o2 PATENTS FORM NO. 5 THE PATENTS ACT 195 3 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION After Provisional - Divided, out of Complete No. 195254 Dated: 14th October 19 80 TITLE: "IMPROVEMENTS IN OR ROTATING TO GUTTER ASSEMBLIES" I/wJjj' Robert Blundell Norgate, a British subject and New Zealand citizen, of 11 Radnor Street, Hamilton, New Zealand hereby declare the invention for which 1/107 pray that a patent may be granted to me/q&y and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement; 207 M> 3 This invention relates to gutter assemblies for dwellings.
Full faced guttering systems have found acceptance in recent years because of their attractive appearance and because a full faced guttering assembly results in an efficient utilisation of materials. Of the systems presently available however, some have disadvantages in that systems which are completed enclosed are difficult to inspect and maintain, and in some cases it may be necessary to dismantle an assembly for this purpose. Furthermore, it is necessary at present to replace completely an old guttering system for a new full face guttering system and this is often wasteful particularly if the existing older style guttering is otherwise in good condition.
It is an object of the present invention to provide gutter assemblies for a dwelling which will go some way to overcoming the disadvantages in the existing apparatus.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the ensuing description which is given by way of example only.
According to the present invention, there is provided a combined fascia/gutter assembly comprising a combined fascia/gutter assembly comprising a trough-shaped fascia/gutter having an upper outer inturned flange,a plurality of mounting brackets for securing the fascia/gutter to a building, said mounting brackets each comprising a fixing portion having an upper fascia support arm which extends outwardly from the fixing portion and terminates with an inwardly directed lip, said fixing portion also having an outwardly extending lip and/or support, and a separate soffit receiving bead which can be fixed to the building beneath the mounting brackets and which allows free movement of the fascia/gutter relative to I n.z. patent Cf-ymi ~2~ ' 16 DEC 1985 RSCffVED 20744-5 the soffit receiving bead for adjustments of level the arrangement being such that the fascia/gutter can be supported by the bracket with the upper outer inturned flange thereof locating with the lip of the upper fascia support arm of the bracket in such a manner that contact is made with the lip of the bracket in two separate positions and a socket and/or stepped portion of the inner side of the fascia/gutter engaging with said outwardly extending lip and/or support of the fixing portion.
Aspects of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1: is a diagrammatic cross-section of a fascia and gutter assembly in accordance with one possible embodiment of the present invention, and Figure 2: .is a side view of a bearer and strap for the fascia and gutter assembly of Figure 1, and Figure 2a: is an end view of the bearer and strap in the direction of IIa:IIa of Figure 2.
N.2. PATENT OFF '6 D£Ci9BS 2 07463 Figure 3: is a diagrammatic cross-section of a fascia assembly for mounting over an existing guttering in accordance with another possible embodiment of the present invention, and Figure 3a: is a diagrammatic cross-section of a fascia assembly for mounting over an existing guttering in accordance with another possible embodiment of the present invention, and Figure 4: is a diagrammatic cross-section of a combined gutter and fascia in accordance with another possible embodiment of the present invention.
With reference firstly to figures 1, 2 and 2a of the drawings, a fascia and gutter assembly in accordance with one possible embodiment of the present invention, may comprise a gutter 1 and a fascia 2 supported by a plurality of brackets generally indicated by arrow 3, said brackets comprising a bearer 4, arranged to support the gutter 1 and to be fixed to and/or extend outwardly from a part of a building such as soffit bearer 5, said bearers 4 being arranged to support a strap generally indicated by arrow 6, having an upper end 6a extending upwards from the bearer and engagable with an upper engaging edge 2a of the fascia 2 and a lower end 6b extending downwardly from the bearer 4 engagable with a lower engaging edge 2b of the fascia 2.
The lower engaging edge 2b of the fascia 2 can be provided with ar. inwardly facing V-shaped groove 7 such that the extreme outer edge 8 of a soffit 9 which may also be fixed to the soffit bearer 5, is engagable therewith. As will be appreciated the V-shaped groove is adapted to receive soffits 9 of various thicknesses and types.
The strap 6 may be fixed to the bearer 4 by screws or nails 10 which pass through apertures 11 in the face 12 of the straps 6. 207463 Preferably the bearers are fabricated from timber of rectangular cross-section and the straps 6 are fabricated from metal or plastics and are of a U-shaped cross-section having opposite limbs 13 thereof spaced such that the straps are a push fit on the ends 3a of the bearers and are therefor capable of being positioned and levelled prior to being fixed to the bearers by the nails or screws 10.
The upper engaging edge 2a of the fascia 2, is arranged such that the fascia may be pulled back (as indicated in dotted outline on figure 1) dismantling the assembly such that the gutter 1 is exposed for cleaning and/or renewal. To facilitate this, the upper engaging edge 2a of the fascia includes an inwardly and upwardly slopping portion 14, sloped to be complimentary with the slope at the extreme upper edge 15 of the strap 6 and an inwardly directed flange 16 having an edge or bead 17 which extends downwardly from the highest point of the upper engaging edge of the strap, the arrangement being such that whilst the fascia 2 is slidable in an outward direction to expose the gutter 1 as aforesaid, the edge or bead 17 will prevent the fascia from falling off the straps 6.
In an assembly as aforesaid, the gutter 1 is preferably a plastics gutter which is positioned such that its lower flat surface la is supported by the bearer 4 and an inner upper edge lb is locatable against a battern 17 supporting a roofing material 18 for the dwelling.
The spouting 1 may be placed on the bearers 4 before or after the fascia 2 is mounted as aforesaid. The assembly can be erected when the bearers 4 are secured to the soffit bearers 5 of a dwelling at desired spacings and levels, the straps 6 which as aforesaid are a push fit on the ends 4a of the bearers 4 are placed on the ends and then secured to the bearers and finally the fascia may be mounted as indicated. 2 0746J With reference to figure 3 of the drawings and in accordance with a further embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a fascia assembly for mounting over an existing guttering generally indicated by arrow 20, said fascia assembly comprising a plurality of upper support brackets generally indicated by arrow 21 arranged to be fixed to an existing fascia board 22 of a dwelling beneath the existing . gutter 20 and at least one elongate lower bracket generally indicated by arrow 2 3 arranged to be fixed to the fascia board 22 beneath the upper fascia support brackets, the arrangement being such that the upper and lower support brackets are locatable with locating means 24 and 25 at the upper and lower edges of the fascia 26 to secure the fascia 26 over the guttering 20.
The upper fascia support bracket 21 can include an upper portion 22 arranged to overlie the upper edge 20a of the guttering 2 0 and having an upwardly extending lip 27 engagable with locating means 24 of the upper edge of the fascia 26 and a lower portion including a foot 28 by which the bracket can be fixed to the fascia board 22 of the building.
The lip 27 is arranged to be cut or bent to thus determine the level of the fascia 26 mounted thereon.
The lower fascia support bracket 23 can include a footing 29 by which the bracket can be fixed to the fascia board 22 and an inwardly directed flange 30 to which the locating means 25 at the lower end of the fascia 26 may engage.
In the assembly illustrated, the fascia 26 is supported by the brackets 21 and 23 and does not rely for its support on the existing spouting supports which may be insufficient. 20746$ With respect of figure 3a of the drawings, in an alternative construction to that illustrated by figure 3, the bracket 21 may have an upper portion 27a identical to the upper end 6a of the strap 6 of figures 1, 2 and 2a and similarly the locating means 24a of the fascia may be shaped similarly to the upper engaging edge 2a of the fascia 2 of the earlier described embodiment.. Thus, the fascia may be withdrawn to expose the spouting 20 as aforesaid.
"With reference to figure 4 of the drawings, a combined gutter and fascia assembly in accordance with another possible embodiment of the present invention, may comprise a trough- shaped fascia and gutter generally indicated by arrow 2&3/ comprising a fixing portion 33 including a straight section 34 and a nail plate section 35 perpendicular to the straight section 34 by which the bracket can be fixed to part of a building such as soffit bearer 36, an arm 37 extending outwardly from the fixing portion 33 and terminating with an inwardly directed lip 38, said fixing portion also mounting an outwardly extending lip 39, the arrangement being such that the fascia and gutter can be supported by the bracket 32 with the upper outer edge 40. thereof locating with the lip of the bracket 33 and a socket and/or step portion 41 of the inner side of the fascia and gutter engaging with said outwardly extending lip and/or support 39 of the fixing portion 33 of the bracket 32 . The assembly of the gutter and fascia 31 to the bracket 32 is such that the mounting portion 40 of the fascia and gutter 31 is in contact with •hvo rniftnlr at least ^2 poin-t^42 and 4 3 of the outwardly extending arm 37 of the bracket 32.
The combined fascia and gutter assembly may be complimented by a soffit receiving bead generally indicated by arrow 44 which may be fixed to soffit bearer 36 beneath the bracket 32 which may include a footing 45 arranged to be--fixed to the 207463 bearer 36 supporting a socket 46 for receiving the outward end 4 7 of a soffit 38. Because the soffit receiving head 44 is separate from other components of the assembly, it is possible to move the fascia and gutter of the assembly for adjustments in level independently of the soffit receiving bead.
In an assembly as shown, the gutter and fascia 31 is a trough shaped member having a front decorative face 4 9 and a rear face 50 including the socket 41 whose end 51 extends into and which is accommodated in a bendbetween the section 34 and 37 of the bracket 32. As with the other embodiments the roof 53 may be supported by battens 54 fixed on a rafter 55 associated with the soffit bearer" 36.
Aspects of the present invention have been described by way of example only and modifications and additions thereto may be made without departing from the scope of the present invention as defined in the apended claims.
