Description

203014

NEW ZEALAND PATENTS ACT 1953

No.: 203014 Date: 13 January 1983

COMPLETE SPECIFICATION "Improvements in or relating to Felling Wedges"

P- _ b&MJ_ .... ^r<tuA'

o-r I r HARVEY VOWLES. a New Zealand Citizen of -03 ninoflion

)</gV Pv^rwrw,

Avenue, Taupo, New Zealand, hereby declare the invention for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in o

and by the following statement:

hjt'.t __' _ ..... L _ . ^ -£*' --1 . 'y^-,.—w^TTTT»r-raif 1W..IIM.J IKLr^'j-SWfr- "' '-' V: ;503014 ;This invention relates to felling wedges and has been devised particulary though not solely for use to cause directional felling of trees. ;It is an object of the present invention to provide a felling wedge which will at least provide the public with a useful choice. ;Accordingly the invention consists in a felling wedge comprising one or more wedge members, and a screw member, said screw member being associated with said wedge member or members so that the longitudinal axis of said screw member is substantially parallel to the operational direction of movement of said wedge member or members in use, said screw member being associated with said wedge member or members so as to be able to rotate relative to said wedge member or members but to be substantially prevented from relative movement along said longitudinal axis relative to said wedge member or members. ;To those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, many changes in construction and widely differing embodiments and applications of the invention will suggest" themselves without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. The disclosures and the descriptions herein are purely illustrative and are not intended to be in any sense limiting. ;One preferred form of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: ;Figure 1 is a side elevation of one preferred form of felling wedge according to the invention; and ;2030J4 ;Figure 2 is a side elevation of an alternative screw member for use in the felling wedge of figure 1. ;Referring to the drawings a felling wiedge 1 is provided which includes one or more and preferably two wedge members 2 which may taper from a narrow end 3 to a wider end 4. The pair of wedge members 2 are desirably intereconnected such as by a suitable base member 5. ;The wedge members 2 may be formed to one of a wide range of ;*

shapes, for example, as shown in figure 1 in solid lines or as shown in the pecked outline 6.

Associated with the wedge membes 2 is a screw member 7 which is preferably tapered being, for example, tapered as shown in figure 1 or tapered to the bullet cone shape of screw member 8 in figure 2. The screw member 7 or 8 is able to rotate relative to the wedge members 2 but is restrained from movement along its longitudinal axis relative to the direction of movement of the felling wedge in use.

Extending from the threaded part of the screw members 7 or 8 in the preferred form is a shaft 9 which may be square in cross section or may otherwise be provided with means whereby the shaft 9 can be gripped by a device to cause the shaft 9 to be rotated.

The shaft 9 is positioned through an aperture at 10 in the base 5 and the screw member 7 or 8 may then be engaged with the base member 5, for example, by means of a collar 11 placed on the shaft 9 so that the base member 5 is positioned between the collar 11 and the screw part of the screw member 7. The screv

503014

member 7 has its longitudinal axis substantially parallel to the direction of movement of the wedge members 2 in normal use.

Thus the screw member may rotate about its longitudinal axis but is substantially restrained from movement along its longitudinal axis relative to the wedge members 2.

The use of the invention is as follows:

In the preferred form of the invention the felling wedge is used to fell trees in a directional manner and to this end r

firstly a cut or cuts or scarfs are made in the tree and the leading point 12 of the screw member and the leading point or narrow end 3 of the wedge members are inserted into the scarf or one of the scarfs.

The shaft 9 is then rotated, for example, by means of a rachet socket spanner. Clearly the shaft 9 can be rotated by other means such as a motor or othewise.

The threads of the screw member 7 will engage and wind into the scarf thereby drawing the wedge members 2 into the scarf. This forces apart the parts of the tree each side of the scarf and wedges 2 thereby causing the tree to topple directionally in the direction sleeted, i.e. away from the wedges 2.

.thus it can be seen that a felling wedge is provided which at least in the preferred form of the invention has the advantage that a tree is able to be felled in a directional manner by means of a simply operated device which is able to be oeprated in a manual manner if desired.
